Before applying, it’s important to clean your skin with a mild soap and lukewarm water. Wash your hands both before and after applying, and apply a moisturizer after using if needed. Use a pea-sized amount of Epiduo, and spread a thin layer over all affected areas. Avoid getting into eyes or mouth. It can take up to 12 weeks of daily to see full results.

Before you can use it, you need to be assessed by a provider to see if your acne might respond well to treatment with Epiduo. If so, they’ll prescribe it for you. Epiduo is available at most pharmacies, but requires a prescription from a doctor. The cost may be covered in whole or in part by your insurance. Check with your provider before using Epiduo if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding. It may not be safe for use during these times. You should not use Epiduo if you are allergic to adapalene (Differin) or benzoyl peroxide. Tell your provider if you are using other medicated skin products, as using more than one acne medication at the same time could cause skin irritation. Avoid using Epiduo Pump on wounds or on areas of eczema, and be careful not to get Epiduo gel in your mouth, nose, eyes, or on your lips.

The most common side effects are itchy, red skin and dryness of skin. You could also experience burning at the site of application and skin irritation. These usually clear up after about 2 weeks as your body gets used to using Epiduo.

Though many medications are compatible with Epiduo, you should check with your provider before applying it. You should not use other acne medications while using Epiduo—this includes benzoyl peroxide and adapalene. Some products may even make your skin more sensitive to light and sun. If you need help picking an acne medication that won’t conflict with others in your routine, talk to a provider.
