Ziana is a topical treatment for mild acne and combination/oily skin. It is a water-based gel that you apply directly to your skin in the area of a breakout.
Ziana is a combination acne treatment, meaning it combines an antibiotic, clindamycin, and a topical retinoid called tretinoin. Ziana helps fight breakouts in two ways. The antibiotic helps reduce the bacteria that triggers breakouts and inflammation while tretinoin speeds up cell turnover rates, helping to clear pores and keep them unclogged.
Because of this combo, Ziana is effective to treat both inflammatory acne like pimples and non-inflammatory blemishes such as blackheads and whiteheads.
- How Does Ziana Work?
Ziana is usually applied once daily, following your nightly face cleansing. Wash your hands before applying, and gently clean the skin where you are having a breakout with a mild or soapless cleanser and then pat your skin dry. Then, use your fingertips to gently apply a pea-sized amount of medication in a thin layer. Be careful to avoid the areas around the lips, eyes, and corners of the nose, as these are sensitive and can become irritated more easily than other parts of your skin.
While it can be tempting to apply more, this won't clear your skin faster, so use it only as directed by your prescriber.
- Where Can I Get Ziana?
Ziana is only available by prescription, and there is no over-the-counter alternative. It is also available in generic form, under a variety of names including Clindamycin Phosphate and Tretinoin Gel. It is safe and widely available in many pharmacies. Talk to your doctor if you think Ziana might be right for you.
- What Precautions Should I Take With Ziana?
You should not use Ziana if you have Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, or have developed colitis while using an antibiotic. Let your doctor know right away if you develop severe diarrhea.
Let your doctor know if you are expecting to get pregnant, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
You should already wear sunscreen every day, but it is especially important to apply sunscreen each day while taking Ziana. Protect your skin from extreme temperatures and wind as well. Do not use drying scrubs, astringents, or cleansers while taking Ziana, and avoid over-the-counter acne medication. As always, let your doctor know if you have any questions.
- What Are Some Side Effects of Ziana?
Ziana can cause some side effects such as skin irritation, dryness, peeling, redness, or stinging or burning. Let your doctor know if you experience these side effects.
In very rare cases, Ziana can cause either lightening or darkening in skin color. Fortunately, this side effect is temporary.
- How should I store Ziana?
Ziana should be kept at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture. Store out of reach of children, and make sure to throw it out after the expiration date.
- Should I wear sunscreen while I am using Ziana?
Yes. Ziana can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so make sure to apply sunscreen each morning and reapply throughout the day as needed.
- What Else Should I Know About Ziana?
When you are using Ziana, make sure to apply other topical medications, soaps, or cosmetics with caution. Be cautious when taking it in combination with products that have a strong drying effect, like products with a high concentration of astringents or alcohol.
Do not take Ziana with products that contain erythromycin. As with any prescription medication, let your doctor know what else you are taking and notify your doctor before making any changes in your medication.
