Birth Control Questions?

  • How much does birth control from Nurx cost?

    Consultation

Anyone who requests a birth control prescription will be charged a $15 consultation fee. This includes unlimited messaging with our medical team about your birth control for one year so you can request prescription changes or ask questions, any time during that period. At this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee. Patients will need to complete a new annual consultation, including any related fees, when a prescription is up for renewal.

Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

    Medication

For those with health insurance, your prescription will be free in most cases as it will be covered by your health insurance. Insurance companies set the “copay” for prescriptions and depending on your plan and the prescription, this will usually be $0. Please connect with your insurance company if you would like to learn more about your copay. If you do have a copay, Nurx will authorize a $30 amount at checkout and it will only be charged if you have a copay. If your copay is over $30 you will receive a notification.

For those without insurance, Nurx offers birth control brands that start at $15 per month. If you’d like a price estimate for a specific brand or type of birth control, please connect with our team at support@nurx.co.

  • Why get birth control online?

Although many women are used to getting birth control through their doctor’s office, you can now get the same options online for less hassle. Nurx offers extensive support to anyone exploring different birth control options, and free shipping once you decide which route you want to take.

Getting birth control online instead of in person has a number of benefits, including:

Convenience. With Nurx, you can request a prescription whenever you want or need it, saving you any scheduling problems or time-consuming trips to the doctor’s office.

Accessibility. When visiting a doctor, you usually only have a few minutes to get all of your questions answered. The medical team here at Nurx can answer whatever questions you might have, when you have them.

Choice. We have access to a wide range of birth control options, both brand-name and generic, that your local pharmacy might not readily have in stock.

Transparency. Our prices are all clearly listed on our website — meaning no more sticker shock when it’s time to check out at the pharmacy.

Savings. Getting your prescription delivered straight to your door means saving money on transportation, parking, and the time you may need to take off work to see your doctor.

Getting your birth control online may feel like a leap, so feel free to contact a member of our team for further information.

  • How does it work?

Once you decide to get birth control online, what exactly happens next? Our process puts you in the driver’s seat:

    1. Request your prescription. Just answer a few health questions on our online intake form and pay $15 for your medical consult (which includes unlimited messaging with our medical team for a year).

    2. Our doctors review your health profile. After carefully evaluating your needs, one of our licensed providers will write a prescription (if medically appropriate).

    3. We deliver your medication. Our pharmacy fills your birth control prescription and sends a three-month supply straight to your doorstep. Our prescriptions come in discreet, unmarked packaging in order to protect your privacy. Shipping is always free.

    4. Your prescription is refilled automatically. We automatically process and ship your refills — no need to send us a reminder. If you change your mind or want to switch to a new birth control method, just let us know.

  • Does Nurx accept insurance for birth control?

Yes, we accept most forms of private health insurance for medications. If you’d like to know if we accept your health insurance plan, please connect with our team at support@nurx.co.

Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

  • Can I Afford This Without Insurance?

We accept most forms of private health insurance, but we also work hard to ensure that those without insurance can afford their birth control. We can provide some forms of birth control to uninsured women for as little as $15 per month.

In addition to carrying the name brands of all major birth control methods, we also offer a number of generic varieties. Generic birth control contains the same active ingredients as its brand-name counterparts, but its cost can be significantly lower.

Want to know whether or not we accept your current insurance plan? Reach out to our customer support team.

  • How is birth control from Nurx shipped?

Nurx offers free shipping for contraceptives, delivered by USPS via 1-3 day priority shipping or first class mail for some refill orders. No signature is required for delivery of birth control. The packaging is generally discreet, and there is no mention of Nurx or a pharmacy on the outside of the envelope.

  • What types of birth control does Nurx offer?

We are proud to offer more than 100 types of birth control, including name brand and generic pills plus the patch, the shot, and the vaginal ring. We are happy to try to order specific brands if you request them as well.

  • Can I get a refill of my existing birth control through Nurx?

Absolutely! If you have used Nurx to get a birth control prescription within the last 12 months, we can easily refill that medication for you. Once you message us, we may have a few health questions for you or recommend some other steps, but we’ll do our best to make sure you get what you need quickly.

If you have a birth control prescription from another doctor, please submit a new request for birth control at nurx.com. Our Nurx Medical Team will be able to better help you after you answer some basic health questions.

  • Does Nurx replace my primary care provider?

Nurx does not replace your primary care provider, but helps you avoid making multiple appointments by allowing you to access basic healthcare in a more convenient way. We encourage you to continue seeing your primary care provider, especially for annual checkups and urgent care.

  • I don't know what birth control to order. Can Nurx help me choose?

If you’re unsure what type of birth control may work best for you, our medical providers will be able to recommend healthy options for you. Just answer a few questions to submit a request and our medical team will help you find the right birth control for you.

  • Can Nurx help me switch to the generic version of my medication?

If your birth control has a generic option, we’d be happy to write that prescription for you. Generics are just as safe and effective as their brand counterparts. Most people don’t notice any difference between brand and generic medications. If you want to switch to a generic, please just message our Customer Care team and they will update your subscription.

What Types of Birth Control Are There?

Sorting through all the different birth control options out there can be tough. Before you make your choice, make sure you’re up to speed on the many forms available and how they work:

How Does Birth Control Work?

There are many types of birth control out there, but at Nurx we specialize in hormonal birth control.

Condoms, diaphragms, sponges, and other forms of physical birth control prevent sperm from reaching the egg. Hormonal birth control prevents ovulation and keeps the egg from ever getting released in the first place.

What’s the Best Form of Birth Control?

Certain bodies and lifestyles work better with some forms of birth control than others. Of the methods we offer at Nurx, all are highly effective: When used perfectly, each of our options has a success rate of up to 99%.

Although hormonal birth control options are great in nearly all cases, using them correctly can require a bit of planning. Starting birth control can bring about all sorts of bodily changes, and whatever method you choose needs to be used regularly in order to work properly.

Whatever you’re looking for in a birth control method, we can help. Here is an overview of some of the different options we offer:

Birth Control Pills

Birth control pills are the most popular method of hormonal birth control, and it’s easy to see why. The pill is small, cheap, highly effective, and has relatively few side effects.

While we offer a number of different pill brands, there are two main types of birth control pills women can choose from: combination pills and minipills.

Combination pills contain both estrogen and progestin and are the most widely used type of pill. Minipills, on the other hand, contain progestin alone. Minipills are recommended for women who are sensitive to estrogen, like those who are breastfeeding.

The combination pill must be taken every day in order to be effective, and the minipill has to be taken every day in the same three hour window. For this reason, birth control pills are great for women who can create a routine and stick to it completely.

Some women take birth control pills for reasons other than preventing pregnancy, such as reducing unwanted bleeding. Certain brands of the pill, such as Yaz, can even be used to treat mild forms of acne.

Birth Control Shots

Birth control shots contain hormones, much like pills. They’re great choices for women who do not want to worry about forgetting a dose.

The Depo-subQ Provera X shot requires the least frequent use of any birth control method, with 12 to 13 weeks between injections. The shot can also help alleviate the symptoms of endometriosis.

Like the minipill, the shot contains no estrogen, making it a smart option for women who react poorly to doses of the hormone.

Birth Control Patches

The transdermal contraceptive patch is worn on the skin and contains the same hormones found in other forms of birth control. It is small, easy to apply, and lasts for a week — making it one of the most hassle-free options out there.

While there is nothing dangerous or harmful about using the patch to stop your period, we don't recommend this in the long-term due to the higher levels of estrogen found in the patch.

Women who don’t want to interfere with their cycle, for medical or personal reasons, might want to consider the patch as their preferred method of birth control.

Birth Control Rings

NuvaRing is another hormone-based birth control option. It’s discrete and delivers maximum freedom for minimal maintenance.

Each ring lasts for four weeks, meaning it can be used for about a month prior to replacement. NuvaRings are small and flexible, ensuring that insertion is easy and pain-free.

Like the Xulane patch, NuvaRing gives you the choice of whether or not you want to have your period.
