About the Service

Q&A

  • What is Nurx’s COVID-19 home testing and online consultation service?

Nurx and our longstanding home testing lab partner Molecular Testing Labs are providing a comprehensive home testing and online consultation service for people who may have been exposed to COVID-19. Our goal is to expand access to testing while decreasing the risk of exposure and taking the strain off in-person healthcare providers.

  • Why is Nurx offering a COVID-19 service?

Our goal is to help people protect themselves and their local communities as this outbreak continues to be understood and controlled. Allowing people to take a COVID-19 test from home is a valuable strategy for containing the virus because it decreases the risk of exposure for both patients and in-person healthcare providers, while also decreasing the strain on brick-and-mortar healthcare services.

  • Does this test meet regulatory requirements?

The COVID-19 at-home collection test from our partner lab Molecular Testing Labs was validated in accordance with FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) per the FDA’s February 29, 2020 guidance. Further, Molecular is conforming to the regulatory requirements of its home state of Washington, as required by the FDA, in validating their at-home collection COVID-19 test for use.

The majority of COVID-19 tests are Laboratory Developed Tests (LDTs). This includes COVID-19 tests provided at a hospital or clinic, as well as the Molecular Testing Lab COVID-19 home collection test. These tests are available for use under the Emergency Use Authorization by the February 29 FDA guidance.

Molecular is CAP-accredited and CLIA-licensed, with extensive experience in infectious diseases and home testing validation.

  • From start to finish, how does the Nurx COVID-19 service work?

After completing an online consultation, a Nurx provider will determine whether home testing is appropriate, based on prevailing public health and clinical criteria for access to COVID-19 testing. Our partner lab will ship the home testing kit overnight along with detailed instructions and a pre-paid overnight mailer to return the sample. Within 48 hours of the lab receiving the sample, a Nurx provider will deliver the test result via the app or website and will advise on appropriate next steps, including whether to seek in-person care or self-isolate.

  • When can I request a Nurx COVID-19 home test kit?

Nurx will make test kits available for request Monday-Saturday beginning at 7 am PT/10 am ET. There will be a limited number of test kits available each day and the service will be focused on people who have had direct exposure to the virus and those who are experiencing symptoms.

For those who are not able to request a test kit on a particular day, we would encourage them to request a test kit the following day beginning at 7 am PT/10 am ET.

  • Why aren’t Nurx COVID-19 home test kits available every day?

Our carrier provides overnight shipping Monday-Saturday. In order to ensure test kits are expediently sent to patients and samples are returned to the lab, we have decided to accept new requests for testing every day of the week except for Sunday.

  • How will you deliver COVID-19 test results to patients?

Our medical team will notify patients of their results through secure online messaging. If results are negative, patients will receive recommendations on how to stay healthy and what to do if they do develop symptoms in the future. When a patient tests positive we will advise them on when they should seek in-person care and when they should self-isolate at home. Patients will be able to message our medical team with any follow-up questions to get expert, personalized advice.

  • From start to finish, how long does the COVID-19 service take?

After you submit your request for COVID-19 testing:

    • A medical provider will review your request within 24 hours.
    • If our medical team determines that testing is a good option for you, an order will be placed at our partner lab. Your kit will be mailed the same day or next day.
    • Once your kit is mailed from our partner lab, it will be shipped overnight to you. You should receive it within 24 hours of when the shipping link is sent to you.
    • Collect your sample and mail your kit back to us. The return shipping is also overnight and the lab should receive it within 24 hours. You will receive a message when the kit arrives at the lab.
    • You can expect to receive your lab results from the Nurx medical team within 48 hours.

As long as you collect your samples and mail them back as soon as possible, the entire process takes 3 to 5 days.

  • How long does it take to get COVID-19 test results?

After the samples have arrived at our partner lab, Nurx’s provider team will get in touch with each patient within 48 hours.

  • How does shipping work for the Nurx COVID-19 home test kits?

The test kits will be offered with overnight shipping, which is available Monday through Saturday. Patients will be able to schedule their pickup online so they won’t need to leave their house in order to overnight ship their sample back to our partner lab. Once our partner lab receives the sample, it will be processed and a Nurx medical provider will get your results back to you within 48 hours.

As long as your order is placed before 1:00 pm PT, it will arrive the next day. Because our carrier doesn’t deliver on Sundays, orders placed after 12:30 pm PT on Friday and anytime on Saturday will arrive on Monday.

  • What safety precautions should I take when returning my samples for the COVID-19 test kit?

For the protection of others who will come in contact with your package, please wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 30 seconds before you collect your samples and again before you place the biohazard bags into the return packaging. When you have finished packing up the box for return, please wipe down the exterior of the box thoroughly with the enclosed alcohol wipe.

  • Why doesn’t Nurx take insurance for the COVID-19 test kit?

Nurx is dedicated to increasing access to COVID-19 testing as quickly as possible. Due to the constantly evolving policies and recommendations around insurance reimbursement, we decided to make these tests available as soon as possible rather than wait for insurance companies to finalize their coverage policies.

  • Who is Nurx’s partner lab?

Our longstanding home testing partner Molecular Testing Labs is a CAP Accredited and CLIA Licensed laboratory with extensive experience in infectious diseases and home testing validation. In partnership with Molecular Testing Labs, we have provided tens of thousands of our patients with home testing for PrEP, HPV, and STIs.

  • When is your medical team available?

Our medical providers are located all over the United States and typically respond to patients within 24 hours. We know that COVID-19 testing is a time sensitive concern and our medical team is ready to urgently care for our patients.

    • Home testing kit: collection materials, detailed guidance and instructions for how to collect samples, and a prepaid envelope to return the sample
    • Overnight shipping: we ship the kit to the patient and include labels for the sample return Results: Test results and guidance based on the results within 48 hours of sample receipt
    • Consultation: Online consultation with one of nearly 50 Nurx medical providers, regardless of test results, through Nurx’s secure messaging system. • How many COVID-19 home test kits do you have available?

We have a very limited supply of test kits available and are working to be able to offer over 100,000 in the coming weeks and months.

  • How does the Nurx COVID-19 home test kit work?

A patient will take the collection swab to brush both sides of the back of their throat, for twenty seconds on each side. They will then place the swab into a collection tube and seal it.

  • What is the accuracy of the test?

The COVID-19 test validated by Molecular was shown to have sensitivity and specificity each exceeding 95%.

  • What happens if my COVID-19 test results are positive? What are your procedures?

When a patient tests positive our medical providers will advise them on next steps and how to best care for themselves, and how to determine when to seek medical attention in person. We will advise them to self-isolate at home until they are symptom-free and have had two negative tests separated by at least 24 hours. We’ll recommend that other members of their households and their close contacts get tested, and do our best to ensure patients who need to seek immediate medical attention do so in a safe way. Patients will be able to message our medical team with any follow-up questions to get expert, personalized advice. We will report all cases to relevant health authorities as required by law.

Because COVID-19 is a communicable disease, if you test positive for this infection we are required by law to report it to your local health department, according to local and state regulations. Additionally, our partner laboratory that runs the test will separately report the positive result, as required by law.

  • What happens if my COVID-19 test results are negative?

We will advise all of our negative patients on how to stay safe and how to recognize early symptoms in case they do eventually get a COVID-19 infection.

  • Is the Nurx COVID-19 home test kit any different than what people would receive in person?

There are several types of COVID-19 testing currently in use across public health departments, hospitals, clinics, drive-through testing centers, and telemedicine. All are effective and the test that Nurx offers is one of the options often used in these settings. The only difference is that instead of a medical professional taking your sample, you are collecting your own.

  • How do you ensure patients collect their sample correctly for the Nurx COVID-19 home test kit?

The home test kit has been extensively scientifically validated for home self-collection by our CAP and CLIA-certified partner lab. The test kit includes detailed instructions for collecting the sample to guide patients through every step of the process.

  • Is the Nurx COVID-19 home test approved by the FDA?

Update as of March 22 -

Our partner lab has reached out to the FDA regarding the latest guidance that applies to self-collection tests. We stand ready to help expand needed and appropriate testing and will continue to explore ways to be supportive in the meantime.

Our longstanding home testing partner Molecular Testing Labs is a CAP Accredited and CLIA Licensed laboratory with extensive experience in infectious diseases and home testing validation. Our partner lab is in compliance with the FDA's Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for COVID-19 testing. In partnership with Molecular Testing Labs, we have provided tens of thousands of our patients with home testing for HIV, HPV, and other STIs.

  • I ordered a Nurx COVID-19 home test and my results were negative. I’m showing symptoms again, can I order a second test?

If you start showing symptoms, even if you have previously been tested negative for COVID-19, you can be tested again. You can submit a new request at nurx.com/coronavirus-testing.

  • Can I have a copy of my COVID-19 test results?

Yes. We share your results through the app and are happy to provide your results in pdf form on request.

  • What does the medical community say about COVID-19 home testing?

A recent article in JAMA advocated that COVID-19 at-home testing could be the "American solution" to expanding access to testing by leveraging telemedicine platforms, laboratory networks, pharmacy chains, and same-day mail and delivery services.

“There are several benefits to a self-service model, including wider availability with lower costs and mitigated risk of exposure to the virus. Home testing would also decentralize care and promote social distancing, particularly for older adults...simply put, teams in hospitals, emergency departments, and clinics can focus on the patients with the highest-acuity health care needs and minimize nosocomial risks.

At-home testing could also promote health equity and patient-centeredness. Providing access to such testing could reduce language, cultural, or logistical barriers to seeking care at a clinic, emergency department, or hospital and reach rural communities where innovations such as drive-thru testing may not be feasible. Many individuals, particularly hourly workers and those without reliable childcare or ready access to transportation, may be better able to obtain testing if necessary.”

Cost & Availability

Q&A

  • Who is eligible for the COVID-19 service?

We will first focus on offering our limited supply of tests to people who have had direct exposure to COVID-19, those experiencing symptoms, and healthcare workers who work in a hospital, nursing home or medical clinic and had direct contact with a patient who was diagnosed with COVID-19. For those who we believe to be medically high-risk we recommend in-person testing and care. Our ability to provide testing will reflect leading clinical public health guidelines.

At this time we cannot offer home testing to people who do not fall into one of the above categories or to people who wish to have the test kit “on hand” in case they need it. If test kit supply allows, which will be determined dynamically, we may change the criteria for who can access a test.

  • How do you determine who is too high-risk for at-home COVID-19 testing?

We will recommend the following people seek in-person care:

People with symptoms that require more immediate in-person care, including those with difficulty breathing.

People with any of the following medical conditions: severe asthma or COPD, uncontrolled diabetes, any condition that makes you immunocompromised, such as cancer, advanced HIV disease, actively undergoing chemotherapy, or recent transplant recipient.

  • Who will not be eligible for the Nurx COVID-19 service?

Because testing capacity will be limited, we will not be able to offer home tests or online consultations to people who do not have specific symptoms or risk factors.

Additionally, we will only be providing these tests to people who are 18 and over.

  • How old do I have to be for the COVID-19 service?

We are only able to provide people who are 18 and older with a test.

  • Do you expect to run out of COVID-19 home test kits?

We have a limited supply of test kits, and we will be prioritizing availability for people who have had direct exposure to COVID-19, those experiencing symptoms, and healthcare workers who work in a hospital, nursing home or medical clinic and had direct contact with a patient who was diagnosed with COVID-19.

  • How much will the COVID-19 service cost?

We are dedicated to making our COVID-19 service as accessible and affordable as possible, in accordance with all relevant insurance and government requirements. At the moment, the service costs $181, which breaks down as: $100 for the lab testing materials, lab work, platform administration and support; $35 for the medical consultation (which includes unlimited test-related follow-up access to a medical provider); $46 for overnight shipping both ways.

Nurx does not bill insurance for the testing service, but you may be able to submit your receipt to your insurance plan for partial reimbursement.

We are in active conversations with public and private partners to try to help provide the testing service at a lesser cost or without charge where possible.

  • How do I submit a claim to my insurance for COVID-19 testing?

Many insurance companies and health agencies have been supportive of covering the costs of COVID-19 testing. However, not all health insurance plans offer coverage for shipping and asynchronous telehealth consultations. The extent of the reimbursement for your COVID-19 home testing depends on your health plan.

The below information is designed to help you, should you wish to submit your own claim for reimbursement. Please note that nothing herein guarantees that you will be reimbursed any amount by your insurance company, and Nurx will not, unfortunately, be able to assist you if your health insurance company does not fully cover the cost of this service.

    Tips for Submitting:

Submitting an insurance claim for reimbursement to your health insurance company will require a few key pieces of information. Before you start, make sure you have:

    • Your insurance policy number, group plan number, and/or member number
    • Any co-insurance information (when you have more than one company providing health coverage) What the service was for (COVID-19 Testing and Telehealth Consultation)
    • Your Nurx itemized bill (which will be sent to the email address you provided, approximately three business days after your lab test is processed.

Directions to submit your reimbursement claim:

Find Your Insurance Claim Form. Typically, the insurance claim forms are available to download on your insurance company’s website. If not, you can call your insurance company directly and request that a reimbursement claim form be sent to you. Specific instructions related to your plan will be on this form.

Complete the Form. If you are filling out a paper form, please only use blue or black ink. You’ll find all the information needed on this form on your itemized bill from Nurx and on your health insurance card. If you are missing any information needed for the form, first call your insurance company and review with them what information you have and ask what other information is absolutely needed to file the claim. If there is required information missing from your Nurx itemized bill, please message us directly and we will do our best to support you.

Review. Double check that all of the fields required on the form are properly filled out with the correct information.

Copy and Submit. Once you have your claim form filled out and have attached your itemized receipt from Nurx, make copies if possible, or save copies to your computer. It is good to keep a copy for your records and makes it easier to re-submit your health insurance claim if it gets lost. If you are submitting the reimbursement claim online, many companies have the option to download your claim as a pdf. Submit your claim online or mail to the address listed on your reimbursement claim form.

  • Why won’t the COVID-19 service be covered under insurance?

Currently, Nurx medical providers, their affiliated medical professional entities and our laboratory partner providing COVID-19 services being offered through the Nurx healthcare platform, may not have contracted with any or all applicable health insurance plans or programs to make these testing services available. As a result, you are responsible for all fees associated with your COVID-19 testing, and neither Nurx nor its lab partner will be submitting any claims for reimbursement to your insurance company. You may, however, wish to seek reimbursement directly from your insurance company.

Many insurance companies and health agencies have been supportive of covering the costs of COVID-19 testing. However, not all health insurance plans offer coverage for shipping and asynchronous telehealth consultations. The extent of the reimbursement for your COVID-19 home testing depends on your health plan.

  • What if I can’t afford the Nurx COVID-19 home test kit?

Unfortunately at this time we are unable to provide payment assistance.

We hope to make consultations and home testing available in as many states as possible and we are still assessing whether we can offer our services in additional states.

At this time, we will not be able to offer home testing to New York residents. Unfortunately regulations specific to New York do not allow for home testing options in the state.

  • Why isn’t Nurx available in all 50 states?

We hope to make consultations and home testing available in as many states as possible and we are still assessing whether we can offer our services in additional states

  • Will you provide the COVID-19 service to caregivers for those who may be at-risk and unable to use the platform?

In order to receive the test, we will need patients to complete and submit the health survey. If needed, we encourage people to ask for help from friends, family members, or caregivers. However, we won't be able to provide consultations until a health survey is submitted by the patient. We encourage people over 70 to seek care from an in-person healthcare provider.
