Common questions

  • What is this medication?

Phenazopyridine is a pain reliever that reduces associated pain from a urinary tract infection. Urine usually has substances in it that can irritate sensitive tissue in your bladder and urethra, causing you to feel like you have to urinate frequently. Once these substances are diluted by urine, they aren’t irritating anymore. Phenazopyridine helps stop irritation of your urinary tract by relieving painful symptoms like burning sensation when you urinate.

  • How does this medication work?

The active ingredient in phenazopyridine, phenazopyridine hydrochloride, is excreted in the urine and has a topical analgesic effect on the urinary tract. This helps to relieve UTI symptoms, such as pain and burning.

  • What are the side effects of this medication?

Side effects that can occur when taking phenazopyridine are usually mild and temporary. These side effects may include upset stomach, headache, dizziness, rash, and itching. Phenazopyridine may also temporarily change the color of urine to orange or red, potentially staining clothing. They should go away once you have stopped taking the medication. If they do not go away or get worse, talk to your medical provider.

  • How do I take this medication?

Take phenazopyridine by mouth as directed by your medical provider. Phenazopyridine is usually taken three times a day for two days. If you’re taking phenazopyridine with antibiotics for UTI symptoms, do not take it for more than 2 days without talking to your medical provider. Phenazopyridine should be taken with food to minimize an upset stomach. It’s important to not exceed four grams of phenazopyridine in 24 hours.

  • Can I take this medication with other medications?

Yes, you can take phenazopyridine with other medications. However, there are certain medications that should be avoided. Please talk to your medical provider about any prescriptions, OTC medications and supplements you’re taking before beginning phenazopyridine.

  • Are there any risks when taking this medication?

It’s worth noting that while phenazopyridine can be an effective UTI pain reliever, it can have some risks. Tell your medical provider about any allergies and let your provider know your medical history, especially kidney disease, liver disease, and any blood disorders. You should avoid taking it with alcohol or marijuana as they may increase side effects of phenazopyridine medication. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, tell your medical provider.

  • How quickly does this medication work?

The good news is that phenazopyridine (phenazopyridine hydrochloride) can start to work almost immediately after you take it. Symptoms usually begin to improve within 2-3 hours, and you should feel better within 2 days of starting phenazopyridine. If your symptoms don’t improve after treatment has been completed, contact your medical provider.
