Common questions

  • What is this medication?

Keflex® is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Infections that Keflex® treats include: skin infections (boils), ear infections, bone infections, respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections (UTIs). Keflex® generally has few side effects.

  • How does this medication work?

Keflex® (cephalexin) is an antibiotic that stops bacteria from reproducing in your body. It works by preventing bacteria from making their own protective covering. This kills the bacteria and prevents them from multiplying.

  • What are the side effects of this medication?

Keflex can cause some side effects in patients. These may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and upset stomach. Other potential side effects include drowsiness and headache. Keflex® can also cause yeast infections, which can be treated with Monistat® or Diflucan®. Tell your medical provider if you experience genital itching with or abnormal discharge while taking Keflex®.

  • How do I take this medication?

Keflex comes as a tablet to take by mouth as directed by your medical provider. It is taken four times a day for five days. Do not take a larger dose or take it more often than recommended. Taking too much Keflex® may increase your risk of side effects. It is best to take Keflex® until the full prescribed amount is completed, even if symptoms disappear sooner, to prevent the infection from returning.

  • Can I take this medication with other medications?

Keflex® does interact with some prescriptions, including other antibiotics and probenecid. It’s important to always let your medical provider know all of the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and supplements.

  • Are there any risks when taking this medication?

Be sure to tell your medical provider your medical history, especially kidney disease, diabetes, and stomach/intestinal disease. People who are pregnant or breastfeeding should inform their healthcare providers. Tell your provider if you are allergic to cephalexin, penicillins, or other cephalosporins such as cefpodoxime.

  • How quickly does this medication work?

Keflex® starts working immediately to fight the infection in your body. Many people notice that symptoms diminish within a day or two of taking Keflex®. If you haven’t noticed any changes or feel worse after 2-3 days, talk with your medical provider.

  • How much does UTI treatment from Nurx cost?

    Consultation
Anyone who requests UTI treatment will be charged a $65 consultation fee. This includes unlimited messaging with our medical team about your treatment (if prescribed) for one week after submitting your treatment request, so you can ask questions about your prescription at any time during that period. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

    Medication
If medication is prescribed, your Nurx medical provider will send the prescription to a pharmacy of your choice for pick-up. You will pay for the medication at the pharmacy and the price will depend on the pharmacy and whether you pay with insurance or out-of-pocket.

  • Does Nurx accept insurance for UTI treatment?

As this treatment is only available for pickup at a local pharmacy near you and is not shipped by Nurx, costs and applicable insurance coverage may vary. Please check with your preferred pharmacy for exact pricing. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.
