    Metronidazole is an antibiotic medication that is used to treat bacterial vaginosis. This medication is also known as Flagyl®. It is available as an oral medication or a topical treatment. Metronidazole works by killing the bacteria that causes bacterial vaginosis, effectively preventing its growth and treating the infection.

  • How do I get a prescription for this medication from Nurx?

    Request a prescription for metronidazole by completing an online health consultation to share important information about your symptoms, health history, and any medications you take. If you are an existing Nurx patient, you will log into your account to submit your request. A licensed medical provider will review your health information and prescribe metronidazole for you, if medically appropriate.

    Your Nurx medical provider will send the prescription to a local pharmacy of your choice for pickup. You will pay for the medication at the pharmacy, either with insurance or out-of-pocket. If you have any questions about the price of the medication or copay, please contact the pharmacy. You’ll have on-demand access to message your Nurx medical provider with any questions for a full week.

  • What precautions should I take when using this medication?

    You should disclose your health history with your medical provider before taking metronidazole. This medicine may not be a good fit for certain individuals. Please inform your medical provider if you have had an allergic reaction to metronidazole or have heart disease, kidney or liver problems. You should avoid drinking alcohol while you are taking metronidazole.

  • Does this medication have any known side effects?

    As with most medications, metronidazole may cause side effects. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, upset stomach, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, metallic taste in your mouth, and constipation. More serious side effects can include unsteadiness, seizures, and severe headache. If you experience any serious side effects after taking metronidazole, please seek in-person medical care.

  • Can I use this medication with other medications?

    Metronidazole may interact with other drugs, so it’s important to tell your medical provider if you are currently taking any other prescriptions and over-the-counter medications or supplements.

  • How long does it take for this medication to relieve symptoms?

    Typically, patients will experience symptom relief within a few days of starting treatment. It is important to complete the full course of treatment even if your symptoms improve before you’ve used all of the medication. If you continue to experience symptoms, or if your symptoms worsen, please seek in-person medical care.

  • Can this medication be used while pregnant?

    Metronidazole is generally considered safe to use while pregnant but please inform your medical provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • How much does bacterial vaginosis treatment through Nurx cost?

    Consultation
    Anyone who requests bacterial vaginosis or yeast infection treatment will be charged a $65 consultation fee. This includes unlimited messaging with our medical team about your treatment (if prescribed) for one week after submitting your treatment request, so you can ask questions about your prescription at any time during that period. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

    If medication is prescribed, your Nurx medical provider will send the prescription to a pharmacy of your choice for pick-up. You will pay for the medication at the pharmacy and the price will depend on the pharmacy and whether you pay with insurance or out-of-pocket.
