Common questions

  • What is this medication?

Bactrim® combines sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. The trimethoprim part fights off what are called gram positive bacteria, while sulfamethoxazole tackles gram negative bacteria. Among its many uses are UTIs, respiratory, intestinal, and middle ear infections.

  • How does this medication work?

Bactrim® (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) is an antibiotic that combines sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. The combination of the two medications works together to stop a chemical that some bacteria make in order to grow. Once the chemical is stopped, the bacteria stop growing and reproducing. This treats urinary tract infections and eases UTI symptoms.

  • What are the side effects of this medication?

The most common side effects when taking Bactrim® are an upset stomach, nausea or diarrhea. Sun sensitivity also develops with Bactrim®, so it is best to avoid sun exposure while taking Bactrim®. Vomiting and loss of appetite may also occur. These symptoms typically clear up within one week after you stop taking Bactrim®. Talk with your medical provider if side effects persist for an extended period of time.

  • How do I take this medication?

Take Bactrim® as prescribed by your medical provider. Bactrim® is usually taken twice a day every 12 hours for 3 days. Taking Bactrim® 12 hours apart helps keep the levels of the antibiotic steady in your body. If you experience an upset stomach, take Bactrim® with food. Drink plenty of water while taking Bactrim®. It is best to continue taking Bactrim® until the full prescription is finished to prevent the infection from returning.

  • Can I take this medication with other medications?

Some medications can interact with Bactrim®, increasing or decreasing its effectiveness. If you take any medications, be sure to talk to your medical provider about potential interactions that may affect your treatment. Tell your medical provider about all of your current prescriptions, supplements and over-the-counter medications.

  • How quickly does this medication work?

While antibiotics don’t work right away, Bactrim® can relieve symptoms in as little as a few hours. It typically takes two days for most women to start feeling better after starting treatment. If you’re not feeling better within 5 days, you may want to contact your medical provider about other possible treatments.

  • How much does UTI treatment from Nurx cost?

    Consultation
Anyone who requests UTI treatment will be charged a $65 consultation fee. This includes unlimited messaging with our medical team about your treatment (if prescribed) for one week after submitting your treatment request, so you can ask questions about your prescription at any time during that period. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

    Medication
If medication is prescribed, your Nurx medical provider will send the prescription to a pharmacy of your choice for pick-up. You will pay for the medication at the pharmacy and the price will depend on the pharmacy and whether you pay with insurance or out-of-pocket.

  • Does Nurx accept insurance for UTI treatment?

As this treatment is only available for pickup at a local pharmacy near you and is not shipped by Nurx, costs and applicable insurance coverage may vary. Please check with your preferred pharmacy for exact pricing. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.
