Antibacterial properties

While it is not an antibiotic, azelaic acid can stop the growth of certain acne-causing bacteria.

Common questions

  • What does azelaic acid do to your skin?

Azelaic acid helps improve skin texture by reducing inflammation, unclogging pores, and targeting bacteria that cause acne. It also helps reduce pigmentation by inhibiting melanin production, leading to a more even complexion.

  • Does azelaic acid have any side effects?

Common side effects include mild redness, dryness, itching, or a stinging sensation at the application site. These effects are usually temporary and can be addressed by decreasing the frequency of application to once a day or every other day.

  • Is it bad to use azelaic acid every day?

Azelaic acid is generally safe to use daily, but if you have sensitive skin you may try to start using it every other day to allow your skin to adjust. If well-tolerated, you can gradually increase to daily or twice daily use.

  • How long does it take azelaic acid to work?

Results from azelaic acid typically take 4-8 weeks to become noticeable. For significant improvement in skin conditions like melasma and acne, it may take up to 3-6 months.

  • What skin conditions does azelaic acid help with?

Azelaic acid is effective for treating acne, rosacea, and melasma. It also helps with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne and overall skin texture.

  • What precautions should I take when using azelaic acid?

Apply azelaic acid to clean, dry skin and follow up with sunscreen during the day, as it may increase sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid using it with harsh exfoliants or other potentially irritating skincare products.

  • Can I use this medication if I am pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive?

Azelaic acid is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

  • Does azelaic acid exfoliate your skin?

Yes! Azelaic acid is part of a group of acids called dicarboxylic acids. It has antibacterial properties and also works as an exfoliant. It is therefore great for keeping pores clear. It is also a good alternative for individuals who are allergic to benzoyl peroxide.
