The science behind it

Fact 01

Fact 02

Interrupts fertilization and implantation

To prevent pregnancy, this medication thickens cervical mucus to stop sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and induces changes to the uterine wall to prevent a fertilized egg from attaching (implantation).

Fact 03

Common questions

  • How does this medication work?

Alyacen 7/7/7® comes in a one-month supply of 28 tablets that are taken at the same time each day. There are 21 active tablets containing a varied dose of estrogen and progestin followed by seven inert tablets that serve primarily as reminder pills. The schedule for taking Alyacen 7/7/7® is:

Take seven white or off-white tablets containing the hormone dose 0.05 mg of norethindrone (progestin) and 0.035 of ethinyl estradiol (estrogen).
Take seven light peach tablets containing the hormone dose 0.75 mg norethindrone and 0.035 mg ethinyl estradiol.
Take seven peach tablets containing the hormone dose 1 mg norethindrone and 0.035 mg of ethinyl estradiol.
Take seven light-green inert tablets to keep you on a daily schedule.
While you're taking the seven green tablets, you should have your period. Even if you don't get your period, begin the next pack of Alyacen 7/7/7® the day after taking the last green tablet.

Alyacen 7/7/7® has other health benefits, as well, and may help to regulate periods and encourage lighter, less painful periods. Alyacen 7/7/7® may help decrease instances of ovarian cysts in the short-term while protecting against ovarian cancer with long-term use.

For Alyacen 7/7/7® to be most effective, store it in a cool, dry place that is easy to remember so you don't forget to take your medication at the same time every day. Keep out of the reach of children and away from direct sunlight.

  • What precautions should I take when using this medication?

Since certain conditions can be worsened when introducing oral contraceptives; let our medical team here at Nurx know about your existing conditions or if you have testing scheduled.

Women who are undergoing treatment for hepatitis C are cautioned against using hormonal contraceptives since they can elevate liver enzymes. Women with diabetes are advised to monitor blood sugar levels while taking oral contraceptives since progestin may increase insulin secretions.

There may be increased risk of heart attack and stroke for women who are hypertensive or who are over 35 and smoke cigarettes. Women with high blood pressure or who continue to smoke over age 35 may consider alternative progesterone only birth control to reduce their overall risk.

Allergic reactions are rare and if you have had an allergic reaction to estrogen, you may consider a progestin-only mini pill instead of Alyacen 7/7/7®. Seek medical attention if you have symptoms of an allergic reaction like difficulty breathing, developing a rash, or swelling of the face, throat, or tongue.

  • What are the side effects of this medication?

When starting a new medication, side effects can occur while your body is adjusting. Most side effects are mild and go away within a few cycles. Most women who experience side effects report them as bloating, headache, breast tenderness, and fluid retention. Women with conditions that cause fluid retention may experience a more pronounced effect from Alyacen 7/7/7®. Breakthrough bleeding may occur but should regulate after a while. Notify your Nurx medical provider if side effects don't go away, if they become a concern, or if you suffer serious side effects.

  • Can I take this medication with other medications?

Yes, but with precautions. It's always a good idea to have a list of medications or supplements you're taking so that you can inform your Nurx medical provider and avoid complications or interactions with other medications.

Instances for interactions are fairly low but can be made worse by underlying risk factors. The effectiveness of some medications may decline when mixed with other medications and increase your risk of pregnancy.

Alyacen 7/7/7® can reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics and anti-seizure medications. In turn, Alyacen 7/7/7® may lose its effectiveness when combined with over-the-counter herbal supplements, particularly St. John's wort. Let your Nurx medical provider know about over-the-counter and prescription medications you're taking to be informed about how Alyacen 7/7/7® might mix with your other medications.

  • What should I know about triphasic birth control?

Triphasic birth control may be prescribed if you have had any issues with previous steady-dose oral contraceptives. Triphasic birth control means the hormone progestin is delivered in varying doses throughout the cycle of 21 active tablets. Triphasic pills may help reduce instances of side effects. If you're not sure if a triphasic oral contraceptive is right for you, talk to us here at Nurx to learn more about the benefits of Alyacen 7/7/7®.

  • Does this medication help with acne?

While not originally intended to treat acne, studies have found that some birth control medications can reduce breakouts and inflammation. If you're interested in learning more about what birth control might help your acne symptoms, visit our Birth Control for Acne page to get started.

  • Does Nurx offer birth control to help with medical concerns other than preventing pregnancy?

Your Nurx medical provider will partner with you to find the best care for your symptoms and medical concerns. As medically appropriate, a Nurx provider may prescribe birth control to help manage symptoms associated with PMS (Premenstrual syndrome) and/or PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder), or to help with cycle control (delayed period). In some cases, birth control may also be used to help manage symptoms of endometriosis and/or PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome), and to assist with improving acne. While the use of birth control is considered “off-label” for these listed purposes, a licensed Nurx clinician may prescribe birth control if they deem doing so medically appropriate.

  • How much does birth control from Nurx cost?

    Consultation
Anyone who requests a birth control prescription will be charged a $28 consultation fee. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

    Medication
For those with health insurance, your prescription will be free in most cases if it is covered by your health insurance, and we accept your plan. Insurance companies set the “copay” for prescriptions and depending on your plan and the prescription, this will usually be $0. Please connect with your insurance company if you would like to learn more about your copay. If you do have a copay, Nurx will authorize a $30 hold at checkout. If your copay is over $30, you will receive a notification to approve the updated amount.

    Support Fee
Nurx will charge a flat $3 support fee each month one or more of your orders are processed. This fee covers your unlimited, on-demand access to our customer care team as well as certain processing fees. This fee will only be charged once in any month, even if you have multiple orders processed that month. This fee applies whether the order is filled through Nurx or at your local pharmacy. If your order is filled via Nurx, the support fee is billed at the time of fulfillment. If your prescription is sent to a local pharmacy, a support fee will be applied at that time. In the future, the support fee will be applied on a cadence that matches your medication refill cadence.

  • Does Nurx accept insurance for birth control?

Yes, we accept most forms of private health insurance for medications. If you’d like to know if we accept your health insurance plan, please connect with our team at [email protected]. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.
Nurx does not accept any federal or state government insurance plans, such as Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, or any of their affiliated managed care plans, nor can Nurx service such patients. We recommend that you find a local provider in your community that participates in your government payer program.
