Common questions

  • How does this medication work?

Briellyn® comes in a 28-day package containing 21 active and seven inactive tablets. For Briellyn® to be 99% effective, each tablet should be taken at the same time every day and with no more than 24 hours between doses. Once the 21 active pills are finished, the remaining inert tablets help keep you in the habit of taking your medication and allow time for menses to take place. Some light spotting or breakthrough bleeding may occur in the first few months of use as your body adjusts to the medication. Start the next pack of Briellyn® whether or not you have your period.

Briellyn® may offer other benefits besides pregnancy prevention such as a reduction in period flow and pain. Briellyn® also may treat some forms of acne.

Store Briellyn® in a cool, dry place to avoid compromising your medication and keep it somewhere convenient so you won't forget to take it at the same time every day.

  • What precautions should I take when using this medication?

Although some medications can make conditions worse, it's wise to consult with your medical provider before starting any medication to determine if it's right for you.

Women with significant hypertension are cautioned against using Briellyn® since oral contraceptives may elevate blood pressure. Diabetic women run the risk of elevating blood glucose levels when taking Briellyn® and are advised to monitor glucose levels closely for changes.

Allergic reactions are rare, but you should seek medical attention if you experience allergy symptoms such as rash or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat. Get medical help if you experience any other rare allergic reactions including sudden fainting or difficulty breathing.

Although Briellyn® does not protect against HIV or other STIs, when used correctly and consistently, Briellyn® is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.

  • What are the side effects of this medication?

Side effects are a fairly common occurrence when taking a new medication and usually diminish with use. Most side effects are relatively harmless and show up as bloating, cramps, spotting, or a change in menstrual flow. Reported side effects of nausea and vomiting may reduce the effectiveness of Briellyn® and may be alleviated by taking your medication at night, or with a meal.

Uncommon serious side effects include blood clots that can result in a heart attack or stroke. Let your medical provider know about headaches that worsen, or symptoms such as fainting, confusion, arm pain, or pain in the groin as these may indicate a serious reaction to Briellyn®. Talk to your medical provider about side effects that aren't going away, or that have become a concern.

  • Can I take this medication with other medications?

Introducing a new medication might interfere with existing medications or supplements, and cause a reduction in the medication's effectiveness. Briellyn® can interfere with treatments and medications for Hepatitis C.

Over-the-counter medications and supplements such as acetaminophen and St. John's wort can interact with Briellyn®. Prescription seizure and HIV medications might reduce levels of progestin and/or estrogen in the body and increase the risk of pregnancy. It's always a good idea to talk to your medical provider about the medications and supplements you're taking to determine if Briellyn® is a good match or if there is a more suitable medication for you.

  • Does Nurx offer birth control to help with medical concerns other than preventing pregnancy?

Your Nurx medical provider will partner with you to find the best care for your symptoms and medical concerns. As medically appropriate, a Nurx provider may prescribe birth control to help manage symptoms associated with PMS (Premenstrual syndrome) and/or PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder), or to help with cycle control (delayed period). In some cases, birth control may also be used to help manage symptoms of endometriosis and/or PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome), and to assist with improving acne. While the use of birth control is considered “off-label” for these listed purposes, a licensed Nurx clinician may prescribe birth control if they deem doing so medically appropriate.

  • How much does birth control from Nurx cost?

    Consultation
Anyone who requests a birth control prescription will be charged a $28 consultation fee. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

    Medication
For those with health insurance, your prescription will be free in most cases if it is covered by your health insurance, and we accept your plan. Insurance companies set the “copay” for prescriptions and depending on your plan and the prescription, this will usually be $0. Please connect with your insurance company if you would like to learn more about your copay. If you do have a copay, Nurx will authorize a $30 hold at checkout. If your copay is over $30, you will receive a notification to approve the updated amount.

    Support Fee
Nurx will charge a flat $3 support fee each month one or more of your orders are processed. This fee covers your unlimited, on-demand access to our customer care team as well as certain processing fees. This fee will only be charged once in any month, even if you have multiple orders processed that month. This fee applies whether the order is filled through Nurx or at your local pharmacy. If your order is filled via Nurx, the support fee is billed at the time of fulfillment. If your prescription is sent to a local pharmacy, a support fee will be applied at that time. In the future, the support fee will be applied on a cadence that matches your medication refill cadence.

  • Does Nurx accept insurance for birth control?

Yes, we accept most forms of private health insurance for medications. If you’d like to know if we accept your health insurance plan, please connect with our team at [email protected]. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.
Nurx does not accept any federal or state government insurance plans, such as Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, or any of their affiliated managed care plans, nor can Nurx service such patients. We recommend that you find a local provider in your community that participates in your government payer program.
