Common questions

  • How does this medication work?

Lo Loestrin® Fe is a pill that’s taken daily. Many women prefer to take their dose around bedtime or after dinner to avoid nausea. Lo Loestrin® Fe should be taken at the same time every day. The “Fe” in Lo Loestrin® Fe stands for iron. Their are two pills at the end of each birth control pack that contains a small amount of iron. This helps with the iron loss that occurs from bleeding.

  • What precautions should I take when using this medication?

Any hormone-based birth control pill poses a very minor risk of an allergic reaction. Some red flags include hives, rashes, itching, dizziness, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Be sure to discuss any existing allergies with your medical provider or our Nurx professionals before you begin.

Those who smoke cigarettes have a higher risk of serious side effects, especially if they’re 35 years of age or older. The more you smoke, the higher the risk. Even if you choose another form of birth control, quitting is always an excellent idea.

Lo Loestrin® Fe has been known to interact with a few other medications. Anything you take should be discussed with your medical provider or Nurx professional, even if it’s an over-the-counter medication or an herbal supplement. Drugs that may interact with Lo Loestrin Fe include cancer meds, such as aromatase inhibitors, and those used for chronic hepatitis C.

While the low dosage in Lo Loestrin® Fe has been known to cause fewer side effects, it’s just as effective as similar birth control pills. There’s no guarantee you won’t get pregnant, though. When taken as instructed, you’re up to 99.7 percent protected.

  • What are the side effects of this medication?

All hormone-based birth control pills come with a small chance of side effects, though the low estrogen level of this particular brand reduces those risks. Common side effects include stomach upset, nausea, headaches, water retention, and breast tenderness.

Some women experience dark, blotchy areas on their face and other parts of their skin. This is called melasma and is not serious. Sunlight can worsen this condition, so use sunscreen and ditch the tanning booth.

  • Does this medication help with acne?

While not originally intended to treat acne, studies have found that some birth control medications can reduce breakouts and inflammation.

  • Do I still ovulate when taking this medication?

One of the ways Lo Loestrin® Fe works is by blocking ovulation so an egg is never released in the first place.

  • Does this medication help with heavy periods?

Yes! Those who suffer every month will find that Lo Loestrin® Fe, with its extra (but low) doses of estrogen, can really help reduce the symptoms of heavy periods. This can mean less bleeding and fewer cramps.

  • Does Nurx offer birth control to help with medical concerns other than preventing pregnancy?

Your Nurx medical provider will partner with you to find the best care for your symptoms and medical concerns. As medically appropriate, a Nurx provider may prescribe birth control to help manage symptoms associated with PMS (Premenstrual syndrome) and/or PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder), or to help with cycle control (delayed period). In some cases, birth control may also be used to help manage symptoms of endometriosis and/or PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) and to assist with improving acne. While the use of birth control is considered “off-label” for these listed purposes, a licensed Nurx clinician may prescribe birth control if they deem doing so medically appropriate.

  • How much does birth control from Nurx cost?

    Consultation
Anyone who requests a birth control prescription will be charged an $18 consultation fee. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

    Medication
For those with health insurance, your prescription will be free in most cases if it is covered by your health insurance, and we accept your plan. Insurance companies set the “copay” for prescriptions and depending on your plan and the prescription, this will usually be $0. Please connect with your insurance company if you would like to learn more about your copay. If you do have a copay, Nurx will authorize a $30 hold at checkout. If your copay is over $30, you will receive a notification to approve the updated amount.

    Support Fee
Nurx will charge a flat $3 support fee each month one or more of your orders are processed. This fee covers your unlimited, on-demand access to our customer care team as well as certain processing fees. This fee will only be charged once in any month, even if you have multiple orders processed that month. This fee applies whether the order is filled through Nurx or at your local pharmacy. If your order is filled via Nurx, the support fee is billed at the time of fulfillment. If your prescription is sent to a local pharmacy, a support fee will be applied at that time. In the future, the support fee will be applied on a cadence that matches your medication refill cadence.

  • Does Nurx accept insurance for birth control?

Yes, we accept most forms of private health insurance for medications. If you’d like to know if we accept your health insurance plan, please connect with our team at [email protected]. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.
Nurx does not accept any federal or state government insurance plans, such as Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, or any of their affiliated managed care plans, nor can Nurx service such patients. We recommend that you find a local provider in your community that participates in your government payer program.
