Necon^® 0.5/35

Necon® 0.5/35 is a combination-type hormone birth control that uses progestin and estrogen to prevent pregnancy by stopping the release of an egg. When taking Necon® 0.5/35, you will take one pill at the same time each day. The first 21 pills are light yellow and contain the progestin and estrogen combination, which prevents pregnancy. The next seven pills are white placebo tablets and do not contain any active hormones. These pills are meant to be a reminder.

Necon 0.5/35® is a generic alternative to Brevicon®. If this generic form doesn't work for you, you can try similar generic options, including Modicon®, Nortrel® 28 0.5/35, and Wera 0.5/35®.

It is always a good idea to discuss your health history with your doctor or one of our Nurx medical professionals before starting a new medication. They can help you evaluate your risk of having an allergic reaction. Although rare, symptoms of an allergic reaction can include rash, itching, facial swelling, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.

Necon® 0.5/35 can also increase your blood pressure or blood sugar levels. If you have a history of high blood pressure or you are a diabetic, your doctor may request additional readings to monitor these levels.

There is always the possibility of side effects when taking a new medication. Fortunately, very few women will experience severe side effects when taking Necon® 0.5/35. Side effects might include nausea, headache, breast tenderness, water retention, and weight changes.

Serious side effects are even more unlikely but have occurred. They include blood clots, severe migraines, weakness in one side of the body, and vision changes. These side effects may sound scary but keep in mind, very few women will experience them. Always inform your healthcare provider of any history of blood clots, high blood pressure, cancer, depression, and diabetes before taking Necon® 0.5/35.

You can take most medications with Necon® 0.5/35. However, you should discuss your use of any prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, or supplements with your doctor or Nurx healthcare professional before taking Necon® 0.5/35. Some drugs may interact with Necon® 0.5/35 including aromatase inhibitors and chronic Hepatitis C medications.

Some medications may also interfere with Necon® 0.5/35's ability to prevent pregnancy. Discuss your use of St. John's wort, seizure medications, and HIV drugs with your Nurx healthcare professional.

Any weight gain you experience when starting this medication is likely due to fluid retention, and should decrease after your body adjusts. If you experience significant weight gain or loss after starting a new contraceptive, it's important to let your healthcare provider know.

When used correctly, Necon® 0.5/35 is a safe and effective method of contraception. It is important not to miss any doses and to take the medication at the same time every day. Missed or late doses can compromise your protection. If you have missed a dose, or have been late taking your medication, consider backup birth control until your next cycle.

Here at Nurx, we often recommend Necon® 0.5/35 because of its ability to treat acne and reduce the occurrence of ovarian cysts. Although Necon® 0.5/35 does not completely stop your period, you are likely to notice that it is more regular, lighter, and less painful. Necon® 0.5/35 does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases and infections.

Your Nurx medical provider will partner with you to find the best care for your symptoms and medical concerns. As medically appropriate, a Nurx provider may prescribe birth control to help manage symptoms associated with PMS (Premenstrual syndrome) and/or PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder), or to help with cycle control (delayed period). In some cases, birth control may also be used to help manage symptoms of endometriosis and/or PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome), to assist with improving acne. While the use of birth control is considered “off-label” for these listed purposes, a licensed Nurx clinician may prescribe birth control if they deem doing so medically appropriate.

Consultation
Anyone who requests a birth control prescription will be charged a $28 consultation fee. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

Medication
For those with health insurance, your prescription will be free in most cases if it is covered by your health insurance, and we accept your plan. Insurance companies set the “copay” for prescriptions and depending on your plan and the prescription, this will usually be $0. Please connect with your insurance company if you would like to learn more about your copay. If you do have a copay, Nurx will authorize a $30 hold at checkout. If your copay is over $30, you will receive a notification to approve the updated amount.

Support Fee
Nurx will charge a flat $3 support fee each month one or more of your orders are processed. This fee covers your unlimited, on-demand access to our customer care team as well as certain processing fees. This fee will only be charged once in any month, even if you have multiple orders processed that month. This fee applies whether the order is filled through Nurx or at your local pharmacy. If your order is filled via Nurx, the support fee is billed at the time of fulfillment. If your prescription is sent to a local pharmacy, a support fee will be applied at that time. In the future, the support fee will be applied on a cadence that matches your medication refill cadence.

Nurx does not accept any federal or state government insurance plans, such as Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, or any of their affiliated managed care plans, nor can Nurx service such patients. We recommend that you find a local provider in your community that participates in your government payer program.
