Yasmin^®

Yasmin® is a hormone-based birth control pill that uses a combination strategy that’s quite common. This means Yasmin® contains two hormones, progestin and estrogen, that work together to prevent pregnant.

Yasmin® is a pill that's taken daily. You should pick a certain time of day and take your pill at the same time each day. Taking your pill at different times may cause Yasmin® to become less effective at stopping pregnancy. This product is available as either Yasmin® 21 or Yasmin® 28. With Yasmin® 21, you take yellow pills every day until you run out, then begin a new pack seven days later. With Yasmin® 28, you take 21 yellow active pills then seven white placebo pills (that serve as a reminder to take them daily).

Generic alternatives of Yasmin® include Femelle® CD, Syeda®, Zarah®, and Ocella®.

As with any birth control pill, you should consult your doctor or one of our professionals before you take Yasmin®. They can help you determine if you're at a high risk for an allergic reaction, which could result in itching, hives, rashes, trouble breathing, or swelling of the lips, throat, or tongue. Overall, the risk of allergic reactions to Yasmin® (and most forms of oral contraceptives) is quite low. Diabetics should be careful to monitor their blood sugar levels when taking Yasmin®. Increased thirst or more frequent urination could be a sign that Yasmin® is affecting your diabetes. Some medical issues may raise some red flags. Be sure to mention if you have a history of heart disease, blood clots, cancer, severe headaches, kidney or liver problems, high cholesterol, or depression.

As with any birth control pill, Yasmin® can increase the risks for stroke, blood clots, and heart attacks depending on your medical history. Yasmin® is not suitable for smokers over 35 or those with a family history of blood clots. Do not take Yasmin® if you are already pregnant.

When used correctly, Yasmin® is a safe and effective method of contraception. It is important not to miss any doses and to take the medication at the same time every day. Missed or late doses can compromise your protection. If you have missed a dose, or have been late taking your medication, consider backup birth control until your next cycle.

Yasmin® does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases and infections.

Every hormone-based birth control pill comes with a chance of side effects, including Yasmin®. Fortunately, most of the common ones are mild and only experienced by about one out of four women. These include breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting, headaches, irregular periods, spotting, elevated blood pressure, and swollen ankles or feet. Serious side effects are extremely rare but have been documented. These include blood clots, heart disease, vision changes, migraines, coughing up blood, unusual sweating, confusion, lumps in the breast, severe stomach pain, yellowed eyes or skin, and mood changes. Stroke-like symptoms can also appear, like dizziness, fainting, slurred speech, or weakness on one side of the body. While these sound scary, keep in mind that they're very uncommon. Also, positive side effects are often experienced by many women. Yasmin® may help clear up your skin or regulate your mood swings. These issues are often hormonal in nature, and Yasmin® may help.

Generally, yes. Medications that contain hormones, however, may cause bad reactions when combined with Yasmin®. They can also reduce Yasmin®'s ability to prevent pregnancy. This is why it's so important to go over anything you're taking, including over-the-counter drugs, recreational drugs, and herbal supplements, with your doctor or one of our Nurx professionals before starting. Specific medications that may interfere with Yasmin® include aromatase inhibitors, anti-cancer meds, and drugs used for chronic hepatitis C.

Any weight gain you experience when starting this medication is likely due to fluid retention, and should decrease after your body adjusts. If you experience significant weight gain or loss after starting a new contraceptive, it's important to let your healthcare provider know.

While both are made by Bayer and approved for birth control purposes, there are several differences between Yasmin® and Yaz®. The hormone levels found in Yaz® are a little different, plus it's been approved to treat acne and PMDD. Yasmin® may help with these, but it's not specifically approved as a medical treatment for either.

Your Nurx medical provider will partner with you to find the best care for your symptoms and medical concerns. As medically appropriate, a Nurx provider may prescribe birth control to help manage symptoms associated with PMS (Premenstrual syndrome) and/or PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder), or to help with cycle control (delayed period). In some cases, birth control may also be used to help manage symptoms of endometriosis and/or PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome), to assist with improving acne. While the use of birth control is considered “off-label” for these listed purposes, a licensed Nurx clinician may prescribe birth control if they deem doing so medically appropriate.

Consultation
Anyone who requests a birth control prescription will be charged a $28 consultation fee. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

Medication
For those with health insurance, your prescription will be free in most cases if it is covered by your health insurance, and we accept your plan. Insurance companies set the “copay” for prescriptions and depending on your plan and the prescription, this will usually be $0. Please connect with your insurance company if you would like to learn more about your copay. If you do have a copay, Nurx will authorize a $30 hold at checkout. If your copay is over $30, you will receive a notification to approve the updated amount.

Support Fee
Nurx will charge a flat $3 support fee each month one or more of your orders are processed. This fee covers your unlimited, on-demand access to our customer care team as well as certain processing fees. This fee will only be charged once in any month, even if you have multiple orders processed that month. This fee applies whether the order is filled through Nurx or at your local pharmacy. If your order is filled via Nurx, the support fee is billed at the time of fulfillment. If your prescription is sent to a local pharmacy, a support fee will be applied at that time. In the future, the support fee will be applied on a cadence that matches your medication refill cadence.
