The science behind it

There are a few different types of birth control you can use to skip your period

You can use regular combination birth control pills and skip the placebo week, continuing into a new pack to skip a period.

Extended cycle birth control pills have a placebo week only every three months, for only 4 periods a year.

The birth control ring can be used to skip a period if replaced immediately instead of waiting a week.

Common questions

  • Is skipping my period with the pill safe?

For many, it is safe to skip your period by using combination birth control pills.

During your monthly period, your body eliminates the accumulated lining of your uterus as well as the unfertilized egg. However, when you’re on birth control, you don’t release an egg and your uterine lining stays thin. Therefore there’s no real need to bleed at all.

  • Which birth control pills are best to use for skipping periods?

It’s best to speak to a Nurx provider about the best birth control option for you. That being said, continuous birth control pills generally may be used to skip or reduce periods because they include 84 days or 12 weeks of hormone-containing (estrogen and progestin) pills followed by 7 days of inactive or placebo pills. Continuous birth control pills are combination pills, but their relatively low amounts of estrogen mean that even when you do have your period it will generally be light.

  • How can I skip my period on birth control?

It’s best to speak with your Nurx care provider about how to safely skip your period using birth control.

  • What types of birth control does Nurx offer?

We are proud to offer more than 100 types of birth control, including name brand and generic pills plus the patch, vaginal ring, and non-hormonal options. We are happy to try to order specific brands if you request them as well.

  • Does Nurx offer birth control to help with medical concerns other than preventing pregnancy?

Your Nurx medical provider will partner with you to find the best care for your symptoms and medical concerns. As medically appropriate, a Nurx provider may prescribe birth control to help manage symptoms associated with PMS (Premenstrual syndrome) and/or PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder), or to help with cycle control (delayed period). In some cases, birth control may also be used to help manage symptoms of endometriosis and/or PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome), to assist with improving acne. While the use of birth control is considered “off-label” for these listed purposes, a licensed Nurx clinician may prescribe birth control if they deem doing so medically appropriate.

  • How much does birth control from Nurx cost?

Consultation Anyone who requests a birth control prescription will be charged an $18 consultation fee. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

Medication For those with health insurance, your prescription will be free in most cases if it is covered by your health insurance, and we accept your plan. Insurance companies set the “copay” for prescriptions and depending on your plan and the prescription, this will usually be $0. Please connect with your insurance company if you would like to learn more about your copay. If you do have a copay, Nurx will authorize a $30 amount at checkout. If your copay is over $30, you will receive a notification to approve the updated amount.

Support Fee Nurx will charge a flat $3 support fee each month one or more of your orders are processed. This fee covers your unlimited, on-demand access to our customer care team as well as certain processing fees. This fee will only be charged once in any month, even if you have multiple orders processed that month. This fee applies whether the order is filled through Nurx or at your local pharmacy. If your order is filled via Nurx, the support fee is billed at the time of fulfillment. If your order is filled via a local pharmacy, the support fee is billed when the prescription is sent to the pharmacy for the very first time. After that, the support fee is billed at the end of any month in which you have a refill at that local pharmacy.

  • Does Nurx accept insurance for birth control?

Yes, we accept most forms of private health insurance for medications. If you’d like to know if we accept your health insurance plan, please connect with our team at [email protected]. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee. Nurx does not accept any federal or state government insurance plans, such as Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, or any of their affiliated managed care plans, nor can Nurx service such patients. We recommend that you find a local provider in your community that participates in your government payer program.
