NuvaRing^®

NuvaRing® uses the same chemicals as birth control pills (Etonogestrel-Ethinyl estradiol) to prevent pregnancy. It prevents ovulation, thickens cervical mucus to block sperm, and thins your uterine lining to prevent a fertilized egg from attaching. NuvaRing® looks similar to a clear rubber band and comes with an applicator that resembles a tampon. This makes it easy to insert NuvaRing®, and most women remove it by reaching in and pulling out the ring themselves. NuvaRing® is painless for most women, who quickly stop noticing it. It is also comfortable during sex and rarely gets in the way.

Before taking NuvaRing®, or any other form of birth control, tell your medical provider if you are taking any medications and if you have any allergies. This can prevent complications from mixing medications. Even though you place the ring inside your vagina, it still releases medication and hormones that can affect your body. NuvaRing® is not recommended for women who are currently breastfeeding. NuvaRing® can reduce the amount of breast milk produced, and trace hormones may get passed on to the baby.

It's unlikely, but the ring may slip out of your vagina. If it has been out for less than 24 hours, rinse it off with cool water and replace it. If it has been out for more than two days, and if it's not the ring-free week, follow the same process. However, after you replace the ring, use backup birth control (such as condoms) for the next seven days to reduce the risk of pregnancy. If you forget to remove your ring after three weeks, remove it and put a new ring in immediately. If this occurs, you may skip a period or have unusual spotting. You may also want to use backup birth control for the following week.

Like all forms of birth control, side effects will vary with every person. You may experience some unpleasant symptoms when you start using NuvaRing®. These should lessen or go away entirely after a few months. These side effects include bleeding between periods, breast tenderness, nausea and vomiting, or moodiness. You may also notice changes in your sex drive or vaginal irritation. Seek urgent medical attention if you have symptoms of a stroke or heart attack, sudden shortness of breath, yellowing of the skin or eyes, weakness, confusion, or trouble speaking.

Changes in appetite are common in women who take birth control, and you may notice a five to ten pound increase when you start taking NuvaRing®. You may also notice swelling of your breasts while you use this form of birth control. Stop taking NuvaRing® if any of these symptoms are excessive or painful, and your medical provider can work with you to find the birth control you need.

NuvaRing® is not FDA-approved to treat acne; however, you may notice clearer skin once you start using it. NuvaRing® regulates your hormones, which can make your acne more stable. Many patients have experienced clearer skin, but you can't rely exclusively on NuvaRing® to control your acne.

Your Nurx medical provider will partner with you to find the best care for your symptoms and medical concerns. As medically appropriate, a Nurx provider may prescribe birth control to help manage symptoms associated with PMS (Premenstrual syndrome) and/or PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder), or to help with cycle control (delayed period). In some cases, birth control may also be used to help manage symptoms of endometriosis and/or PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) and to assist with improving acne. While the use of birth control is considered “off-label” for these listed purposes, a licensed Nurx clinician may prescribe birth control if they deem doing so medically appropriate.

Consultation
Anyone who requests a birth control prescription will be charged an $18 consultation fee. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

Medication
For those with health insurance, your prescription will be free in most cases if it is covered by your health insurance, and we accept your plan. Insurance companies set the “copay” for prescriptions and depending on your plan and the prescription, this will usually be $0. Please connect with your insurance company if you would like to learn more about your copay. If you do have a copay, Nurx will authorize a $30 hold at checkout. If your copay is over $30, you will receive a notification to approve the updated amount.

Support Fee
Nurx will charge a flat $3 support fee each month one or more of your orders are processed. This fee covers your unlimited, on-demand access to our customer care team as well as certain processing fees. This fee will only be charged once in any month, even if you have multiple orders processed that month. This fee applies whether the order is filled through Nurx or at your local pharmacy. If your order is filled via Nurx, the support fee is billed at the time of fulfillment. If your prescription is sent to a local pharmacy, a support fee will be applied at that time. In the future, the support fee will be applied on a cadence that matches your medication refill cadence.

Nurx does not accept any federal or state government insurance plans, such as Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, or any of their affiliated managed care plans, nor can Nurx service such patients. We recommend that you find a local provider in your community that participates in your government payer program.
