Common questions

  • How does this medication work?

Depo-subQ Provera 104® is a shot type of birth control. During the first five days of your period, you will shake the shot for a full minute and then inject the medication underneath the skin, either in the stomach or upper thigh area. Then, you will repeat these injections every 12 to 14 weeks, depending on your Nurx healthcare professional's instructions.

  • What precautions should I take when using this medication?

Generally speaking, Depo-subQ Provera 104® is a safe medication that is effective at preventing pregnancy. However, it is important to discuss your health history with your medical provider or a Nurx healthcare professional before taking Depo-subQ Provera 104®. An allergic reaction is rare but possible and includes rash, itching, dizziness, and difficulty breathing. It is also possible for Depo-subQ Provera 104® to increase your blood pressure.

Changing the injection site each for each shot can help to prevent any skin injuries. Depo-subQ Provera 104® is generally not used as a long-term birth control medication unless other options are not available. A Nurx healthcare professional can help you identify your risk and recommended length of usage.

  • What are the side effects of this medication?

Side effects are always a possibility when taking a new medication. Potential side effects include nausea, headache, appetite changes, weight gain, acne, hot flashes, tender breasts, and pain at the injection site. Fortunately, side effects are rare and many of the women who do experience side effects will notice minimal ones.

More serious side effects are rare but possible. These include a worsening of depression symptoms, vaginal bleeding, persistent nausea, blood clots, and breast cancer. While these side effects sound scary, it is important to note that they are rare, and instead, many women will notice a decrease in pain correlated to menstruation.

  • Can I take this medication with other medications?

Generally, Depo-subQ Provera 104 is safe to use with other medications. However, it is always a good idea to discuss your current medication and supplement usage with your Nurx™ healthcare professional. Warfarin, a medication that is used to prevent blood clots, may interfere with Depo-subQ Provera 104®.

Some medications like St. John's wort, seizure medications, and HIV drugs may also interfere with Depo-subQ Provera 104®'s ability to prevent pregnancy.

  • Is this medication an intramuscular injection?

No, the Depo-SubQ Provera 104® shot is injected subcutaneously (under the skin) in the stomach or upper thigh. Intramuscular versions of Depo-Provera are available at certain medical providers offices and need to be injected by a provider.

  • Does this medication cause weight gain?

It is possible for Depo-subQ Provera 104® shots to increase body weight. Your Nurx healthcare professional can help you determine your risk and recommend dietary or exercise changes that can help to combat weight gain.

  • Does this medication contain estrogen?

Depo-subQ Provera 104® does not contain any estrogen. This makes it a popular birth control medication for women who are breastfeeding and those who have had negative side effects on estrogen-based birth control.

  • Does Nurx offer birth control to help with medical concerns other than preventing pregnancy?

Your Nurx medical provider will partner with you to find the best care for your symptoms and medical concerns. As medically appropriate, a Nurx provider may prescribe birth control to help manage symptoms associated with PMS (Premenstrual syndrome) and/or PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder), or to help with cycle control (delayed period). In some cases, birth control may also be used to help manage symptoms of endometriosis and/or PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) and to assist with improving acne. While the use of birth control is considered “off-label” for these listed purposes, a licensed Nurx clinician may prescribe birth control if they deem doing so medically appropriate.

  • How much does birth control from Nurx cost?

    Consultation
Anyone who requests a birth control prescription will be charged an $18 consultation fee. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

    Medication
For those with health insurance, your prescription will be free in most cases if it is covered by your health insurance, and we accept your plan. Insurance companies set the “copay” for prescriptions and depending on your plan and the prescription, this will usually be $0. Please connect with your insurance company if you would like to learn more about your copay. If you do have a copay, Nurx will authorize a $30 hold at checkout. If your copay is over $30, you will receive a notification to approve the updated amount.

    Support Fee
Nurx will charge a flat $3 support fee each month one or more of your orders are processed. This fee covers your unlimited, on-demand access to our customer care team as well as certain processing fees. This fee will only be charged once in any month, even if you have multiple orders processed that month. This fee applies whether the order is filled through Nurx or at your local pharmacy. If your order is filled via Nurx, the support fee is billed at the time of fulfillment. If your prescription is sent to a local pharmacy, a support fee will be applied at that time. In the future, the support fee will be applied on a cadence that matches your medication refill cadence.

  • Does Nurx accept insurance for birth control?

Yes, we accept most forms of private health insurance for medications. If you’d like to know if we accept your health insurance plan, please connect with our team at [email protected]. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.
Nurx does not accept any federal or state government insurance plans, such as Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, or any of their affiliated managed care plans, nor can Nurx service such patients. We recommend that you find a local provider in your community that participates in your government payer program.
