The science behind it

FACT 01

Regulates appetite

These medications act like the body’s hormone(s) to help control appetite and how the body processes food.

FACT 02

Delivers full-body benefits

After meals, hormones like GLP-1 are released throughout the body to affect receptors in the brain, stomach, pancreas, heart, and more.

FACT 03

Takes cues from lizards

The Gila monster inspired GLP-1s as its venom contains hormones that impact appetite and metabolism, which helps to regulate blood sugar.

Common questions§

  • What is a GLP-1?

GLP-1 medications mimic the action of the GLP-1 hormone that is naturally released by the body and can help to reduce appetite, decrease overeating, and lose weight.

  • How long do I need to take a GLP-1 before I see weight loss?

It’s possible to see weight loss in the first month of treatment. However, because everyone responds differently to medications, it may take some time to find the dose that works best for you. Most people lose weight with continued treatment after a few months. We recommend aiming for 1-2 pound weight loss per week, but your healthcare provider can provide personalized guidance based on your individual response.

  • What else does GLP-1 do?

    • Helps control blood sugar by enhancing insulin secretion
    • Protects the heart, improves heart function, reduces blood pressure, and lowers risk for heart disease
    • Improves brain health, possibly by reducing inflammation and protecting nerve cells
    • Supports liver health including metabolic-associated fatty liver disease
    • Reduces inflammation
    • Helps with cholesterol (especially bad cholesterol)

  • What is a hormone?

A hormone is a chemical messenger that travels through the blood to reach different organs and tissues.

  • Can I use my insurance to cover brand-name GLP-1s?

We recommend you contact your insurance company via the number on the back of your card to see if you have coverage for branded GLP1s.  You can also go directly to the manufacturer’s website and enter in your information to determine if you have coverage. Insurance coverage for brand-name GLP-1 medications typically require prior authorization, meaning your provider must get approval from your insurance company before you can get the prescription. This process can take several weeks and isn’t always approved, especially if the medication is prescribed for just weight loss (rather than diabetes).

  • Do GLP-1 medications have any known side effects?

GLP-1 is a hormone that affects many different organs in the body, which is why it has numerous benefits. However, sometimes the effects of the medication can be quite pronounced, leading to side effects.

The most common side effects of GLP-1 medications are often related to their effects on the gastrointestinal (GI) system. For example, changes in the lower GI tract can cause constipation or diarrhea, while delayed stomach emptying may lead to heartburn, acid reflux, or sulfur burps. GLP-1s also act on the part of the brain that controls appetite. While this helps reduce hunger, overstimulation in this area can sometimes be felt as nausea. When combined with slower digestion, this may lead to vomiting.

We recommend that you let your provider know immediately if you experience any negative effects of the medications. You are also encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

We are here to help you manage side effects. If you experience side effects, be sure to let your provider know as they can provide personalized guidance and educational content. They may even be able to prescribe treatment to help you manage these concerns.

For any serious or severe side effects, please seek in-person medical care.

  • What happens if I experience side effects?

To help mitigate any side effects you might experience from these medications, your provider will likely have you start with a low dose of treatment and gradually increase it over time to reach the target dose. If you do experience side effects, your provider can offer personalized guidance and resources to help. They also may prescribe treatment to help manage certain side effects if appropriate.

  • Can I use this medication if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

We don't know if GLP-1s are safe in pregnancy. Because it may harm a baby if taken during pregnancy, stop taking your GLP-1 as soon as you know you are pregnant. If you plan to get pregnant, stop taking your GLP-1 at least 2 months before you start trying to conceive. This is important because it takes time for the GLP-1 medication to leave your body. It is not known if GLP-1 medication passes into your breast milk. Please consult your Nurx provider if you plan on breastfeeding.

  • How will I get my prescription?

    • If prescribed a brand-name GLP-1 pen prescription, it will be sent to your preferred local pharmacy, where you can fill the medication at your convenience. These medications are not available for home delivery through Nurx.
    • If prescribed a Zepbound® single-dose vial, it will be shipped to you via Gifthealth.†
    • If prescribed a compounded GLP-1, Nurx will ship your medication directly to you.

  • How much does the program cost?

The initial consultation fee is $39, followed by a monthly provider support fee of $59/month.

    • If you are prescribed a brand-name GLP-1 pen, pricing typically ranges from $650-1300/month on average for lowest dose without insurance coverage (ask your local pharmacy to confirm the price). You will pick up and pay for your medication at your local pharmacy.
    • If you are prescribed a Zepbound® single-dose vial, the starting 2.5mg dose is $349/month and the 5mg dose is $499/month. The 7.5mg and 10mg doses are also available for $499/month if you refill your prescription within 45 days of your previous delivery. If more than 45 days have passed, standard pricing applies: $599 for 7.5mg and $699 for 10mg. Note: You will pay for your medication via our pharmacy partner, Gifthealth. You may also be charged by Gifthealth for necessary supplies (syringes, alcohol pads, etc.).†
    • If you are prescribed a compounded GLP-1, pricing starts at $179/month for lowest dose. Higher doses are $299/month.

Many people with overweight or obesity who lose weight have a tendency to regain all or some of the weight over time. Overweight and obesity medication efficacy increases with the addition of diet and exercise. Individual response to treatment may vary and is not guaranteed by Nurx.
