Get to know the formulation †‡

We offer two treatment options, each combining Bupropion HCl and Naltrexone HCl with either Metformin HCl or Topiramate. Based on your consultation, your provider will help you understand which option is best for you. Research indicates that combining these medications is more effective for weight loss than using any one medication on its own.

Common questions§

  • What are the ingredients in Nurx 3-in-1 Pill?

The active ingredients in Nurx 3-in-1 Pill are one of two combinations:

    • Option 1: Naltrexone HCl 5 mg/Bupropion HCl 50 mg/Metformin HCl 250 mg capsule
    • Option 2: Naltrexone HCl 5 mg/Bupropion HCl 50 mg/Topiramate 25 mg capsule

Inactive ingredients may include Silicon Dioxide, Sodium Stearyl Fumerate, Silicified Microcrystalline Cellulose, Sucralose, and flavoring. Please refer to your specific product packaging or consult with your Nurx provider for the exact formulation you are prescribed.

  • How long do I need to take these medications before I see weight loss?

For most people, it can take a few months to notice a change in weight. Consistency is key! Taking the medication, eating a healthy diet, and incorporating physical activity into your lifestyle are all crucial steps to achieving results.

  • How can I make these medications work best for me?

Always follow your provider’s exact prescribing instructions. You should also follow the titration instructions carefully. Additionally, weight loss medications work best when combined with a low-calorie diet and regular physical activity. It’s also important to have regular check-ins with your Nurx provider to track your progress and adjust your treatment if needed.

  • Do these medications have any known side effects?

    Yes, side effects are possible.

    • The most common side effects of the Nurx 3-in-1 Pill: Naltrexone HCl 5 mg/Bupropion HCl 50 mg/Metformin HCl 250 mg capsule are gastrointestinal (GI) side effects, such as unpredictable or sudden diarrhea and stomach upset.
    • The most common side effects of the Nurx 3-in-1 Pill: Naltrexone HCl 5 mg/Bupropion HCl 50 mg/Topiramate 25 mg capsule are neurocognitive sensory side effects, like numbness, tingling, and cognitive slowing.

Fortunately, these side effects typically improve over time as your body adjusts to the medication. We are here to help you manage side effects. If you experience side effects, be sure to let your provider know as they can provide personalized guidance and educational content. They may even be able to prescribe additional treatment to help you manage these concerns.
For any serious or severe side effects, please seek immediate in-person medical care.

  • What precautions should I take when using these medications?

It’s important to ensure that your entire care team, including other healthcare providers, know you are taking this medication, as it may interact with other medications or treatments. Be sure to talk to your Nurx provider before starting these medications if you have depression, other mental illness, diabetes, or are 65 years or older.

    • Bupropion may cause changes in your mood or behavior. Stop taking this medication and let your healthcare provider know immediately if you develop agitation, hostility, depressed mood, or changes in thinking/behavior that are not typical for you.
    • Naltrexone can increase the risk of an opioid overdose if you take opioid medications while using it. Do not take this medication if there is a chance you will take opioid pain medication. This medication may increase your blood pressure or cause hypertension. Do not start this medication if you have been diagnosed with coronary artery disease.
    • Metformin is safe for most people. However, you should get medications containing metformin from an in-person provider if you have liver or kidney disease, heart failure, low blood pressure, alcohol dependence, or a history of lactic acidosis. Do not take this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant. Additionally, metformin is safe to use with most medications but it's a good idea to talk to your primary care provider before combining Metformin with Fenofibrate or Colchicine as the combination may increase your risk for muscle damage. Additionally, combined with metformin, medication such as Topiramate, Zonisamide, and Valproic Acid may increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
    • Topiramate is safe for most people. However, you should not take medications containing Topiramate if you have kidney or liver disease, history of glaucoma, history of kidney stones, or serious depression. If you have history of depression and/or suicide, reach out to your care provider before starting Topiramate. Do not get pregnant or breastfeed while taking this medication, as studies show that it can be associated with birth defects. Additionally, Topiramate may cause your birth control to be less effective. We recommend touching base with your provider to discuss alternatives and/or strategies to prevent pregnancy while using this.

Always take this medication exactly as prescribed. Additionally, contact your Nurx healthcare provider if you experience side effects, have questions, or notice any changes in your health status.

  • What makes Nurx 3-in-1 Pill different from other oral weight management medications?

Nurx 3-in-1 Pill is a custom-made medication that combines medications commonly prescribed for weight management into one single capsule. Available in two formulations, this allows for even greater personalization to help you reach your weight goals. Our unique formulations include a lower dose of Naltrexone HCl that is easier to tolerate than what's available as a standalone medication. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved or evaluated for safety, efficacy, or quality.

  • How much does the program cost?

    Consultation
Anyone who requests weight management treatment will be charged a $39 consultation fee. This fee covers a Nurx affiliated provider reviewing your consultation, medical history, and weight loss goals to create and prescribe your treatment plan, if medically appropriate. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the initial medical consult fee.

    Medication
If you are prescribed either version of the Nurx 3-in-1 Pill, a 1-month supply of treatment will start at $75. This treatment is not covered by insurance. If you are prescribed an oral medication plan of multiple medications, the cash price for your treatment will cost $60-125/month depending on your medications, and you may be able to use insurance for certain medications.
