Common questions

  • How does spironolactone work?

Spironolactone is a prescription pill that is not FDA-approved for hair loss, but has been shown in clinical studies to treat hair loss by blocking the effects of hormones that are responsible for hair loss. When taken consistently, this medicine can reduce hair shedding and promote hair regrowth for those with androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of hair loss.

  • How should I use spironolactone?

This is an oral tablet taken by mouth once or twice a day. Patients first starting spironolactone may start with a smaller dose and may be increased to a higher dose based on a patient’s individual needs. Do not increase dosage unless specifically instructed by your provider. Those prescribed spironolactone should try to take their doses around the same time everyday to stay on track. Continued use is necessary to increase and maintain your hair regrowth, or hair loss will begin again. You can take oral spironolactone with or without food and should not take this medication more than directed.

  • When will I see results from using spironolactone?

Clinical studies have shown that most patients experienced improvements in hair loss, including thicker hair and less shedding, by 6 months and even earlier for some patients. Results may vary, and you may not see results right away, but it is important to continue taking the medication as prescribed by your provider even if you don't see immediate results.

  • Can I use spironolactone with other medications for hair loss?

Yes, you can use spironolactone with other medications that may improve scalp health, such as topical medications. In fact, spironolactone is commonly prescribed in combination with minoxidil 5% foam, as this can increase its effectiveness.

  • Can I use spironolactone if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

Spironolactone should not be taken by people who are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. It’s important to let your provider know of any changes so they can advise on alternative treatment options.

  • Does spironolactone have any known side effects?

Side effects may include drowsiness, lightheadedness, headache, low blood pressure, stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. It is rarely associated with electrolyte abnormalities (increased potassium levels), and may interact with some prescription medications. To reduce instances of lightheadedness, rise slowly from a lying or sitting position to allow your blood pressure time to adjust. Notify your provider if symptoms persist or worsen. Serious side effects are rare but can occur. Alert us if you experience serious side effects such as increased thirst, changes in urine production, mood changes, unexplained fatigue, muscle spasm, period changes, or changes in the breast.
