Pyridium (also known as phenazopyridine) is a medication used to relieve symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs). It helps reduce bladder pain and burning, which can be side effects of UTIs. Pyridium does not treat the cause of UTIs, but it can help with symptoms while other treatments take effect. It acts as a painkiller to soothe the bladder pain that often occurs with a UTI.

What is Pyridium?
Pyridium is a pain reliever that reduces associated pain from a urinary tract infection. Urine usually has substances in it that can irritate sensitive tissue in your bladder and urethra, causing you to feel like you have to urinate frequently or even constantly. Once these substances are diluted by urine, they aren’t irritating anymore. Pyridium helps stop irritation of your urinary tract by relieving painful symptoms like burning sensation when you urinate.
How does Pyridium work?
The active ingredient in Pyridium, phenazopyridine hydrochloride, is excreted in the urine and has a topical analgesic effect on the urinary tract. This helps to relieve UTI symptoms, such as pain and burning.
What are the side effects of Pyridium?
Side effects that can occur when taking Pyridium are usually mild and temporary. These side effects may include upset stomach, headache, dizziness, rash, and itching. Pyridium may also temporarily change the color of urine to orange or red, potentially staining clothing. If you experience any of these symptoms after taking your dose of Pyridium, talk to your healthcare provider about them. They should go away once you have stopped taking the medication. If they do not go away or get worse, talk to your medical provider.
How do I take Pyridium?
Take Pyridium by mouth as directed by your medical provider. Pyridium is usually taken three times a day for two days. If you’re taking Pyridium with antibiotics for UTI symptoms, do not take it for more than 2 days without talking to your medical provider. Pyridium should be taken with food to minimize stomach upset. It’s important to not exceed four grams of Pyridium in 24 hours.
Can I take Pyridium with other medications?
Yes, you can take Pyridium with other medications. However, there are certain medications that should be avoided. Please talk to your medical provider about any prescriptions, OTC medications and supplements you’re taking before beginning Pyridium.
Are there any risks when taking Pyridium?
It’s worth noting that while Pyridium can be an effective UTI pain reliever, it can have some risks. Tell your medical provider about any allergies and let your provider know your medical history, especially kidney disease, liver disease, and any blood disorders. You should avoid taking it with alcohol or marijuana as they may increase side effects of pyridium medication. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, tell your medical provider.
How quickly does Pyridium work?
The good news is that Pyridium (phenazopyridine hydrochloride) can start to work almost immediately after you take it. Symptoms usually begin to improve within 2-3 hours, and you should feel better within 2 days of starting Pyridium. If your symptoms don’t improve after treatment has been completed, contact your medical provider.
