What is Macrobid?
Macrobid (nitrofurantoin) is an antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections. This medication is also known as Macrodantin, nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals, and Furadantin. The invention of antibiotics like nitrofurantoin have made UTIs less common in people living in developed countries than they once were.
How does Macrobid work?
Macrobid stops the growth of bacteria. It works by killing the bacteria that are responsible for the urinary tract infection. Macrobid treats UTIs very efficiently by targeting bacteria at the site of infection. This medication can be taken for 5-7 days, depending on how severe the infection is.
What are the side effects of Macrobid?
Common side effects of Macrobid include headache, gas, and nausea. Some Macrobid users may also experience vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, or fatigue. Side effects may improve over time as your body adjusts to the medication. If you continue to experience side effects while on Macrobid and haven’t been taking any other medications or supplements that could be contributing to these side effects, contact your healthcare provider.
How do I take Macrobid?
Take Macrobid exactly as prescribed by your medical provider. If you do not understand these directions, ask your medical provider to explain them to you. It is best to take Macrobid with food and to swallow the medication whole. Macrobid is usually taken twice daily, every 12 hours. Wash your hands before and after using Macrobid and any other medication.
Can I take Macrobid with other medications?
Macrobid may interact with other drugs, so it’s important to tell your medical provider if you are currently taking any other prescription medications or supplements. Additionally, be sure to let your healthcare provider know of any over-the-counter medications you are taking before you begin treatment with Macrobid.
Are there any risks when taking Macrobid?
You should discuss your full health history with your medical provider before taking Macrobid. The medicine should not be taken if you have any serious medical conditions such as kidney or liver disease. If you are pregnant, tell your medical provider. If you are breastfeeding, talk with your medical provider about whether you should stop breastfeeding or whether a different prescription may be better for you. Avoid drinking alcohol while you are taking Macrobid.
How quickly does Macrobid work?
Unfortunately, there’s no fast way to clear up a UTI. While it typically takes 24-48 hours to see significant improvement with most UTI treatments, these antibiotics may not completely eliminate your symptoms for several days. Continue to take Macrobid for the full prescribed amount of time until it is finished, as stopping the medication too early may allow the infection to return.
