Common questions

  • What is trazodone HCl?

Trazodone HCl is a prescription drug that was first approved by the FDA in 1989 to treat depression. It is also approved for the treatment of insomnia. Trazodone HCl can be prescribed for either short-term or long-term use and its effectiveness at treating depression has been well documented over time.

  • How does trazodone HCl work?

Trazodone HCl belongs to a class of drugs called serotonin modulators. It works by affecting certain chemicals in your brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression. The effect of these medications can vary from person to person. In some cases, these drugs need to be taken for several weeks before their effects are felt. In other cases, they may begin working more quickly.

  • What are the side effects of trazodone HCl?

Like most medications, trazodone HCl has a list of side effects that you should be aware of before starting treatment. Side effects of trazodone HCl may include drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, stomach upset, and changes in appetite. Some people may also experience mild headaches and constipation. This medication should not be used if you have heart disease or a seizure disorder. Talk to your doctor if you have any severe or ongoing symptoms during treatment—it’s important to monitor your condition closely when taking medication for mental health conditions like depression or anxiety.

  • How do I take trazodone HCl?

Take trazodone HCl by mouth with or without food. You may take it with food if you have trouble swallowing pills. For treatment of depression, trazodone is taken one or two times a day. For treatment of insomnia it should be taken at night before bed. Follow your doctor's instructions for taking trazodone HCl exactly as prescribed.

  • Can I take trazodone HCl with other medications?

Do not take trazodone HCl with alcohol or other medications that cause drowsiness. If you are taking any medications, ask your doctor if they might interact with trazodone HCl. This includes prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Be sure to let your healthcare provider know about all medicines you are taking, even those for which you have a prescription or over-the-counter drugs.

  • Are there any risks when taking trazodone HCl?

Trazodone HCl should not be used by people with a history of seizures, heart disease, or liver disease. Consult your doctor before using trazodone if you have diabetes, kidney disease, overactive thyroid or enlarged prostate. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness while taking trazodone avoid driving or operating machinery and talk to your doctor about these potential side effects.

  • How quickly does trazodone HCl work?

When used for the treatment of insomnia, it should work immediately, if adequately dose. For depression, most people start to see improvement in the first 2-4 weeks of treatment. Should you experience worsening symptoms or no improvement in your symptoms, reach out to your medical provider immediately.
