What is Diflucan?
Diflucan (fluconazole) is an antifungal medication that fights fungal infections in your body. It works by interfering with fungal cell growth and replication, which ultimately leads to their death. Though you may know about its use for treating yeast infections, it’s actually also used to treat a number of other ailments. Diflucan can be prescribed off-label for several other conditions, including certain types of meningitis and oral thrush.
How does Diflucan work?
Diflucan is a well-known oral antifungal medication. It works by stopping the growth of Candida in the infected areas of the body. This means that if you have an infection with Candida albicans or other Candida species, Diflucan will quickly destroy it.
What are the side effects of Diflucan?
Side effects of Diflucan include headache, nausea, and upset stomach. Other side effects may occur, including vomiting, dizziness, and a metallic taste in your mouth. Talk to your medical provider if you experience more serious side effects, if you continue to experience symptoms, or if side effects worsen over time.
How do I take Diflucan?
Take Diflucan by mouth as directed by your medical provider. Diflucan can be taken with or without food. Typically, for a vaginal yeast infection the dose is 150 mg taken one time only by mouth. Symptoms usually improve within 1-3 days. Contact your medical provider if symptoms persist.
Can I take Diflucan with other medications?
Taking Diflucan with other medications is usually safe. However, it may interact with some medications or supplements, including clopidogrel. Diflucan may also slow down the removal of other medications from your body, which can affect how they work. To make sure there are no interactions with your medication, tell your medical provider about any prescription drugs, OTC medications, supplements or herbal remedies you take before starting treatment.
Are there any risks when taking Diflucan?
Tell your medical provider if you have any allergies. Stop taking your medication if you develop a serious allergic reaction. Before taking Diflucan, tell your medical provider your medical history, especially liver disease, kidney disease, and heart problems. If you take other medications, talk to your medical provider before taking Diflucan. It is best to avoid alcohol while taking Diflucan. If Diflucan causes dizziness, do not drive or use machinery. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, tell your medical provider.
How quickly does Diflucan work?
Diflucan typically starts working between 24 and 48 hours after you take it, though it may take up to three days for symptoms to improve. If you don’t notice improvement in that time, let your medical provider know.
