How it works

1

Request treatment

Complete our online medical consultation by answering questions about your health history. If you're eligible for PrEP, our providers will place lab orders for you.

2

Complete labs

Our providers will review the results to see if PrEP is right for you. If you test positive for any STIs they can either prescribe treatment or recommend options for in-person care.

3

Get your prescription

If prescribed PrEP, your three-month supply of daily pills will be delivered with free shipping in discreet packaging—ensuring your privacy every step of the way.

4

Repeat on schedule

To safely continue taking PrEP, you’ll need lab work every three months. Before your current prescription runs out, we will contact you to complete a renewal survey so we may order your labs.

Common questions

  • How much does PrEP cost?

    Consultation
Anyone requesting a PrEP evaluation will be charged a $30 consultation fee. This covers your online consultation, review of lab results, and unlimited messaging with our medical team about PrEP for three months until your next renewal—so you can ask questions anytime during that period.

A $30 consultation fee will apply each time you renew your PrEP prescription. Please note, we currently do not bill insurance for this consultation fee.

    Medication
If you have insurance, we will bill your plan for the medication, and you will only need to pay any applicable copay. To learn more about your copay, please contact your insurance company directly. If you are not using insurance, medication costs may vary, but we will let you know of available discounts to make it more affordable.

    Non-Home Testing
Before starting PrEP, you will need lab tests to confirm you are HIV-negative, have healthy kidneys and do not have chronic Hepatitis B. You can have your labs done at a local lab like LabCorp® or Quest®. After submitting your PrEP request, just message us to let us know you would like to do your lab testing locally. Lab prices depend on your insurance coverage, so we recommend contacting your insurance company beforehand to find out which labs are in-network.

When you contact your insurance company to confirm coverage for lab testing, we recommend asking these questions:

    • Do I need to use an in-network lab for testing?
    • If yes, which laboratories are covered?
    • Do I have a deductible for lab testing?
If your insurance company asks, you can tell them the tests ordered for PrEP include:
    • HIV 4th Generation Antigen/Antibody
    • Serum Creatinine
    • Hepatitis B Surface Antigen
    • Optional STI tests: Hepatitis C (blood), Syphilis (blood), Chlamydia/Gonorrhea (via throat/rectal swabs and urine sample)

  • Does Nurx accept insurance for PrEP?

Yes, we accept most private health insurance plans for medications, and many cover PrEP. If you want to check whether we accept your insurance, please contact our team at [email protected]. Please note, we currently do not submit insurance claims for the medical consultation fee.

Starting and staying on PrEP requires lab work every 3 months, which may or may not be covered by your insurance. If you don’t have insurance and are concerned about cost, please reach out for information on affordable PrEP options.

Nurx does not accept federal or state government insurance plans such as Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, or their managed care plans, and cannot serve patients with these coverages. We recommend finding a local provider who participates in your government insurance program.

  • Can I get my PrEP lab tests done in person at a lab near me?

Yes, you may complete your lab tests at a local lab such as LabCorp® or Quest®. After submitting your PrEP request, simply message us to let us know you prefer lab testing at one of these locations.

Since lab costs depend on your insurance, we recommend contacting your insurance provider beforehand to verify whether LabCorp® or Quest® is covered under your plan.

  • What are the side effects of PrEP?

Many new PrEP users report little to no side effects, but symptoms such as headache, abdominal pain, and weight loss can happen. These side effects typically don’t last long and often go away entirely within the first month. If you’re experiencing prolonged side effects, please contact us.

  • Is there a generic PrEP medication?

Yes, generic versions of the PrEP medication Truvada® have been available since September 2020. Like brand-name drugs, generics are reviewed by the FDA and contain the same active ingredients, dosage, strength, and usage instructions. The generic Truvada® (Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil) is bioequivalent, meaning it works just as effectively as the brand-name version. Because generic PrEP may come from different manufacturers, the pills or packaging might look different at times. Don’t worry—it's the exact same medication, just with a different appearance. Descovy® (Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Alafenamide) is another type of oral PrEP. It is very similar to Truvada, and equally effective. However it is only available as a brand-name Descovy®, there is no generic available.

  • What if I miss a dose of PrEP?

If you miss a dose or skip a day, it’s ok! Take your pill as soon as you remember and continue with your daily schedule. Do not double dose, as you may feel nauseous or sick. Missing one dose won’t greatly affect your level of protection against HIV. However, if you are missing multiple days or are having trouble with taking a pill daily, let us know.

  • How do I get PrEP through Nurx?

Nurx is an easy, discreet, and judgement free way to access PrEP. How this works:

    • Request PrEP through our app or website
    • Answer questions about your medical and sexual health
    • Our medical team will review your request and order labs if PrEP appears to be a safe and suitable option for you.
    • After you complete the required lab tests, our PrEP provider team will review your results. If PrEP is a good fit for you, your PrEP prescription will be sent to you in a discreet package.

Once you complete the necessary lab work, our medical team will review your results. If they determine that PrEP is right for you, your medication will be mailed to you in a discreet package.

  • How do I know if I am at risk of contracting HIV?

Generally, PrEP is for anyone at increased risk for contracting HIV, including anyone who is in an ongoing relationship with a person living with HIV, anyone who does not consistently use a condom, and anyone who shares injection drug or hormone equipment. Studies have shown that PrEP can be beneficial for people of various gender identities and sexual orientations.
