How do I know I have a UTI?

The symptoms of urinary tract infections can be hard to distinguish from other conditions, including sexually transmitted infections. UTI symptoms usually come on quickly and remain steady until treated or resolved. Here are common symptoms of UTIs and STIs.

  • Pelvic pain
  • Increased pelvic or bladder pain with urination

Test for STIs at home

Because painful urinary symptoms can sometimes indicate a sexually transmitted infection, you may want to test for STIs if you haven’t had a check in a while.

Common questions

  • How does UTI treatment with Nurx work?

People with vaginas who are experiencing symptoms of a urinary tract infection (such a strong urge to urinate, frequent urination, pain with urination, dark or smelly urine), can request care any time through the Nurx website or app. They simply answer questions about their symptoms and health history, then pay $65 for a medical consultation. WIthin a day (and usually sooner) a Nurx medical provider license in the patient’s state will review, reach out to the patient with any follow-up questions, then prescribe or recommend a treatment plan (if medically appropriate). Treatment usually involves antibiotics, and sometimes patients will also be prescribed medication to relieve symptoms while they wait for the antibiotics to take effect. The Nurx medical provider will send the prescription to a local pharmacy of your choice for you to pick up. You will pay for the medication at the pharmacy, either with insurance or out-of-pocket. If you have questions about the price of the medication or copay, please contact the pharmacy. You can message your Nurx medical provider any time for a week after your UTI treatment request, to ask questions about your symptoms or medication.

  • How much does UTI treatment with Nurx cost?

    Consultation
Anyone who requests UTI treatment will be charged a $65 consultation fee. This includes unlimited messaging with our medical team about your treatment (if prescribed) for one week after submitting your treatment request, so you can ask questions about your prescription at any time during that period. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

    Medication
If medication is prescribed, your Nurx medical provider will send the prescription to a pharmacy of your choice for pick-up. You will pay for the medication at the pharmacy and the price will depend on the pharmacy and whether you pay with insurance or out-of-pocket.

  • Does Nurx accept insurance for UTI treatment?

As this treatment is only available for pickup at a local pharmacy near you and is not shipped by Nurx, costs and applicable insurance coverage may vary. Please check with your preferred pharmacy for exact pricing. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

  • What medications does Nurx prescribe for UTIs?

Nurx prescribes the antibiotics Macrobid, Septra, Bactrim, Sulfatrim, and Keflex, and your medical provider will choose one based on your symptoms and health history. They also may prescribe Pyridium, a medication that alleviates pain and other symptoms of urinary tract infections.

  • Does Nurx deliver UTI treatments?

No. Urinary tract infections usually need prompt treatment, so our medical team will send the prescription to a local pharmacy of your choice for you to pick-up in person.

  • Are Nurx’s services available in languages other than English?

At this time, we only provide care in English. We are committed to creating an inclusive experience and are exploring options to expand language support in the future.
