You can take PrEP as long as you are at risk for contracting HIV. For some people this can mean for the duration of a relationship, and for others this can mean for a lifetime with regular testing to ensure you are healthy enough to stay on PrEP.
PrEP is something that you can start and stop at any time without long-term side effects. PrEP should be continued for 30 days after the last potential exposure to HIV. Each time you start PrEP you will need to take it for 7 to 21 days before it reaches maximum effectiveness. If you are considering stopping PrEP, please reach out to your provider so you can stop in the healthiest and most efficient way.
