Birth Control

Anyone who requests a birth control prescription will be charged a $30 consultation fee. This includes unlimited messaging with our medical team about your birth control for one year so you can request prescription changes or ask questions, any time during that period. Medication

For those with health insurance accepted by Nurx, the cost of your prescription will be covered by your insurance in most cases. Insurance companies set the copay for prescriptions and depending on your plan and the prescription, there will usually be no added copay. Please connect with your insurance company if you would like to learn more about your copay. If you do have a copay, Nurx will charge a $30 amount at checkout and it will only be charged if you have a copay. If your copay is over $30 you will receive a notification to accept or decline the higher copay.

If you choose to pay out-of-pocket or if you don’t have insurance, Nurx offers birth control brands that start at $15 per month. If you’d like a price estimate for a specific brand or type of birth control, please connect with our team at [email protected].

Patients will need to complete a new annual medical consultation in order to renew a prescription. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee. Each time you order a new test kit and evaluation for renewal of your prescription you will be charged a $30 medical consultation fee.

Medication

Truvada for PrEP is an expensive medication, but we’re proud of the fact that 99% of Nurx PrEP patients pay $0 out-of-pocket for their medication.

Our team will bill your insurance (if you choose to use it) and help you apply for payment assistance programs. We’ll work to make testing as affordable as possible after available discounts. Our PrEP team is here to guide you. With insurance coverage: PrEP is often covered by insurance, but it’s good to make sure. Ask your insurance company whether PrEP for HIV prevention is covered under your plan, and what your copay will be for each month’s prescription. Without insurance coverage: We work with several payment assistance programs that subsidize some of the cost of PrEP – although not of lab testing.

If you’d like to learn more about how much PrEP will cost for you, please connect with our team at [email protected].

Home Test Kit

Before you begin PrEP you must get lab tests to confirm that you are HIV negative and have healthy kidneys. You’ll re-do these tests every three months after beginning PrEP. Our preferred testing option is home-based lab testing through our partner lab, which is an option in every state we are available in except for New York. We are committed to providing a convenient and cost-effective home testing option for our PrEP patients.

If you choose to pay out-of-pocket or if you don’t have insurance: $164 for comprehensive testing, which includes all of the necessary tests to get on PrEP + extra testing for additional sexually transmitted infections (STIs); OR $94 for basic testing which includes all of the testing necessary to get on and stay on PrEP, and free shipping both ways.

For those paying with insurance: Once your tests have been processed by our partner lab, Molecular Testing Labs, they will bill your insurance and you will be responsible for any out-of-pocket costs including copays and deductibles associated with your plan.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: If you receive a bill, it will come directly from our lab partner, Molecular Testing Labs. An Explanation of Benefits from your insurance company regarding the lab services will not list Nurx, but rather Molecular Testing Labs or their affiliates.

Non-Home Testing

If you’d prefer not to do home testing you are welcome to have your labs done at a local lab such as LabCorp or Quest. Once you have submitted your request for PrEP, simply message us and tell us that you would like lab testing at the local lab you choose. Pricing at local labs is dependent on your insurance coverage. We recommend calling your insurance company in advance to confirm whether LabCorp or Quest is the in-network laboratory.

If you contact your insurance company to clarify your coverage for laboratory testing, we’d recommend asking them the following questions:

  • Do I have to use an in-network lab for lab testing?
  • If yes: What laboratories are covered?
  • Is Molecular Testing Labs covered?
  • Do I have a deductible for lab testing?

If your insurance company asks, tell them these are the tests that will be ordered for PrEP: HIV 4th generation antibody/antigen test, serum creatinine, hepatitis B surface antigen (all required), and (optionally) syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia testing (rectal swab, throat swab, urine collection).

STI Testing

Medical Consultation

Anyone who requests an STI Home Test Kit will be charged a $30 consultation fee. The consultation fee provides patients with unlimited access to the Nurx medical team regarding their STI results. Please note that at this time, we do not submit claims to insurance for the medical consult fee.

Home Test Kits

Without health insurance, Basics Covered costs $150, Healthy Woman costs $190, Full Control costs $220, and all kits require a $14.50 service fee. These prices include the kit, the lab testing, and shipping both ways.

With health insurance, each test kit costs $29.50 and applicable copays or deductibles. If you pay with insurance, your out-of pocket-expense will depend on whether our partner lab, Molecular Testing Labs, is in-network with your insurance and on your specific plan’s coverage. Once you’ve submitted your samples, MTL will then bill your insurance for the lab services – and you will only be responsible for any out of pocket costs. Please check here to see if your insurance is in-network: What insurance plans have Molecular Testing Labs in-network?

If your insurance is out-of-network with Molecular Testings Labs then you will be billed a negotiated rate of $99 for lab testing and the lab will bill you directly.

Medication

If you pay with insurance, we will bill your insurance directly for your medication and the price you pay will depend on the specifics of your plan. Because valacyclovir is a generic medication your copay (if you have one) should be quite affordable.

If you do not pay with insurance and pay directly for the medication it costs $45 for a 3-month supply of outbreak treatment (meaning you only take the medication when you experience an outbreak or feel one coming on). It costs $75 for a 3-month supply of preventive therapy (meaning that you take a pill every day to prevent outbreaks). If you have both oral and genital herpes and need outbreak treatment the price will be $60 for a 3-month supply. Prescriptions are delivered with free shipping.

To request herpes treatment from Nurx, get started here.

*A Nurx medical provider may prescribe valacyclovir with instructions to take it every day to prevent oral herpes outbreaks. This is called “suppressive” treatment and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet approved valacyclovir as a suppressive treatment for oral herpes, which means this is an “off label” use of the medication. It is legal and not uncommon for physicians to prescribe FDA-approved medications for off-label uses if they conclude that it is the ideal course of treatment for their patients. Please message your Nurx provider if you have questions about taking valacyclovir daily for oral herpes prevention.
