Is depression genetic?

The National Institute of Mental Health conducted a study that found that genes may affect certain mental illnesses, such as depression and schizophrenia. However, not all cases of depression or schizophrenia are genetic. If you are concerned about your own mental health, talk to your medical provider to learn about potential treatment options for you or family members who have been diagnosed with a mental illness.
