Product details

Nordette a combination birth control pill containing two hormones — progestin and estrogen — that work together to prevent pregnancy. These hormones interrupt ovulation by preventing the release of an egg during the menstrual cycle, while also interrupting fertilization by making vaginal fluid thicker to prevent sperm from reaching an egg. Nordette also changes the lining of the uterus to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. Our team at Nurx can prescribe Nordette at special request, or can offer the generic equivalent Levora for as low as $0 with insurance or as little as $15 without insurance.

  • How Does Nordette Work?

Nordette is a 28-day pill cycle with one pill taken by mouth every day at the same time. Nordette is 99% effective when taken at the same time every day. Missing doses can cause Nordette to lose its effectiveness, so have a backup method ready in case you forget a pill or if you are taking a dose three hours later than usual. Nordette does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea and chlamydia.

  • Is it Easy to Get Nordette?

Nordette is available by prescription. Contact your insurance provider to determine if your medication is covered.

  • Are There Any Precautions?

Let your doctor know about any history of blood clots, high blood pressure, abnormal breast exams, or cancer. If you are diabetic this medication may affect your blood sugar, so be sure to check it regularly.

Nordette can cause blotchy, dark areas on the face, and sunlight may worsen the effect. Avoid tanning booths and sun lamps, and use sunscreen when you're outdoors. Nordette might cause problems with contact lenses and make them difficult to wear. Contact your eye doctor if this happens to you.

Nausea and vomiting can decrease the effectiveness of Nordette. If you experience stomach issues while taking Nordette, consider taking the pill after a meal or at bedtime.

Allergic reactions are rare but might show up in swelling of the face and throat, dizziness, or breathing problems. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of these.

  • Are There Any Side Effects?

    • Spotting.
    • Nausea and vomiting.
    • Headache.
    • Bloating.
    • Breast tenderness.
    • Swelling (fluid retention).
    • Weight change.

Most side effects are common and dissipate once you've been taking the medication for a while.

Serious side effects include lumps in the breast, mood changes, or severe abdominal pain. Although rare, this medication can cause serious problems from blood clots. Women with a history of blood clots are advised to talk to their healthcare provider about taking Nordette.

  • What Kind of Birth Control is Nordette?

Nordette is a combination pill containing the two female hormones progestin and estrogen. Nordette is monophasic, which means each pill contains the same dosage of hormones. Monophasic pills are the most popular prescribed and work to prevent pregnancy even during your period.

  • Is Nordette Effective Right Away?

As with any birth control product, it takes some time for your system to absorb it properly so that it functions at its full capacity. It's always a good idea to use a backup method of birth control for the first week while starting a new birth control method.

  • Will Nordette Make Me Gain Weight?

Since every woman is different, and every female body as well, it's hard to predict if you will gain weight or not. While weight gain can be a side effect, so can weight loss. If your weight has changed while taking Nordette, give the medication time to work and your body time to adjust before deciding whether or not to continue.

  • What Else Should I Know About Nordette?

It is possible for Nordette to interact with other medications, and it is known to have adverse reactions with medications containing estrogen agents. Be sure to let your healthcare provider know which medications you are taking, so you both can determine if Nordette is right for you.
