What Are the Causes of Genital Warts?

In most cases, genital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are between 30 to 40 strains of HPV that can have an effect on the genital region. Only a few of these will actually result in genital warts. Genital warts are often classified as a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) because the HPV varieties that can cause it are transmitted by skin-to-skin and sexual contact. Because it is so highly transmittable, the CDC says that most sexually active people will get HPV at some point in their life.

How Are Genital Warts Contracted?

Sexual activity puts you at a high risk of contracting one of the strains of HPV that can lead to genital warts. There are also groups that run a higher risk of contracting the disease such as those under 30, smokers, those with a weakened immune system, and children of mothers who had the virus during childbirth. Unprotected sex can also increase your risk of contracting the virus.

To reduce your risk of contracting genital warts it is important to be regularly tested for HPV and vaccinated. At Nurx we offer HPV testing in the comfort of your home. If you contract genital warts seeking treatment early can be the best defense.
