What is Truvada?

Truvada is a brand name medication of PrEP, a daily pill that’s up to 99% effective at preventing at-risk individuals from contracting HIV when used correctly. PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis — in other words, protection before being exposed to the virus. The medication contains a combination of emtricitabine (200 mg) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (300 mg).

Emtricitabine

Emtricitabine is an FDA-approved HIV medication that’s always used with other medications. It works by blocking an enzyme to prevent HIV from spreading and might lower the amount of HIV in your body. Specifically – the medication is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI).

Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is another FDA-approved NRTI used with other HIV meds. This is why Truvada contains both this medication and emtricitabine. Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate blocks the same enzymes as emtricitabine to the same effect.
