Aranelle is a tri-phasic birth control pill. Its two active ingredients are synthetic versions of estrogen and progesterone, the hormones in your body that regulate your period. It is a tri-phasic pill because each pack contains three different kinds of pills with differing hormone levels. Aranelle may also have some positive side effects: It can lead to more regular, lighter, and less painful periods, and clear up acne.
At this time Nurx only offers Aranelle for pickup at your local pharmacy, but we carry similar birth control options available for delivery. Just answer a few quick questions and one of our licensed providers will help find the birth control that’s right for you. Click here to get started.
- How Does Aranelle Work?
Aranelle is a tri-phasic birth control pill, which means that each 28-day pill pack contains three different types of pills with three levels of hormones, in addition to placebo pills. Tri-phasic pills were created to lower the risk of potential side effects by only giving you the hormones you need at each particular time throughout the month.
Take Aranelle once per day at the same time each day. Aranelle may be taken with food to reduce nausea.
- How Can I Get Aranelle?
Aranelle is widely available at pharmacies with a doctor's prescription. It is a generic option and also available under the brand name Tri-Norinyl.
- What Precautions Should I Take Before Starting Aranelle?
Aranelle is highly effective in preventing pregnancy when taken as directed. However, it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV. If you are taking Aranelle, you should take all of the usual precautions you would normally take to protect against sexually transmitted infections, including using latex condoms, talking to your sexual partners about their status, and getting tested regularly.
As with any prescription medication, talk to your doctor before taking Aranelle. Before taking Aranelle, let your doctor know if you have abnormal vaginal bleeding, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, cancer, or any other medical condition. Taking oral contraceptives can increase the risk of blood clots. Smoking increases the risk of blood clot or stroke, especially if you are over 35 years old, so do not smoke while you are taking this medication. Aranelle can also raise your blood pressure or blood sugar, so those with diabetes should take note and consult with their doctors. While these side effects sound scary, don't forget that they are relatively rare.
Do not take Aranelle if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not take Aranelle if you are a smoker or have an allergy to estrogens or progestins.
- What Are Some Side Effects of Aranelle?
Some women experience spotting or light vaginal bleeding, or feel nauseous, during the first to third pack of pills. Talk to your healthcare provider if this problem doesn't go away after taking three pill packs.
Other potential side effects include irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting, fluid retention, change in appetite, loss of scalp hair, and rash.
- Does Aranelle Cause Weight Gain?
It is a relatively common myth that birth control pills cause weight gain. Water retention and enlarged breasts may be mistaken for weight gain in women who take birth control pills. Don't let the fear of weight gain prevent you from getting on the pill.
- How Should I Store Aranelle?
Store Aranelle at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep it out of the reach of children, and throw away all unused medication after the expiration date.
