If you are struggling with getting your acne under control, you’ve got to check out Differin. You don’t have to put up with the frustration that can come with acne anymore! Differin is a gel that is applied topically to the skin. The active ingredient is a retinoid, which is a chemical compound form of vitamin A used to inhibit and regulate skin cell growth.
Our team at Nurx cannot prescribe and deliver Differin, but can offer other generic retinoids, like Tretinoin Cream, for as low as $0 with insurance or as little as $30 without insurance.
- How Does Differin Work?
Differin gel is most effective when used every day for an extended period of time. It's a good idea to use it before bed at the same time every night to help yourself remember to apply it. Only apply the gel to washed and dried skin, using freshly washed hands. Apply a thin layer over the affected area. If you are treating acne on your face, apply Differin to your entire face, not just the acne spots.
The dosage for prescription Differin is typically a 45-gram tube of 0.3% Adapalene, but you can find Differin with 0.1% Adapalene over the counter. You'll want to store your Differin gel at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees, and keep it from freezing.
- Is Differin Readily Available?
Worried about insurance coverage? Nurx professionals have your back and will help make sure your medications are affordable and accessible. We at Nurx accept most types of health insurance but also work with customers who don't have coverage to offer affordable medication options.
Differin is available over the counter in a less concentrated form (Adapalene 0.1%). Most pharmacies carry the prescription-strength form of Differin (Adapalene 0.3%), too. You can also find Differin acne treatments in creams and lotions.
- Are There Any Precautions to Know About?
If you have allergies related to retinoid use or other vitamin-A drugs, you shouldn't use Differin. People with allergies to any drugs or common ingredients in topical creams and gels should check with their doctor before applying Differin to their skin.
Be sure to ask a doctor before using Differin if you have a history of skin reactions to acne-fighting products. People with eczema should also check with a dermatologist before starting to use this product. If you are pregnant, nursing, or trying to become pregnant, Differin may not be right for you, so talk to your doctor first.
- What Are the Possible Side Effects?
As with any medication or topical treatments, there are possible side effects to keep in mind. The most common side effects are dryness, skin irritation, and worsened acne, but there are simple steps you can take to avoid and treat these potential issues. Use a gentle moisturizer to help decrease the dryness that may be caused by Differin.
Be sure not to use moisturizers with glycolic acids or alpha hydroxyl, as these ingredients can add to the dryness. Rare side effects include serious allergic reactions (rash, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing) and skin discoloration. Contact your doctor if you notice any of these reactions.
- What Other Important Information Is There About Differin?
Drug interactions are always possible with any medications used, so it's a good idea to keep track of all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take on a regular basis. Let your doctor know about these regular medications during your consultation for Differin.
You might be tempted to think that you'll get better or faster results by applying more Differin gel more frequently, but excess use or overdose can actually make acne and skin irritations worse and decrease the overall effectiveness of the medication.
If you were already using an acne treatment product that caused a negative reaction, make sure you stop the use of that product at least a week before starting Differin in order to give your skin time to heal. Products containing glycolic acid or alpha hydroxy acids, solutions for perming hair, and any skin or shaving products made with menthol, lime, or alcohol may interact with Differin and decrease effectiveness or cause irritation.
Avoid prolonged sun exposure and tanning beds while using Differin. Avoid waxing for hair removal in any of the areas where Differin has been applied. Abrasive hair removal and skin care products can worsen irritation. Minor irritation, burning, or itching usually decreases after continued use of Differin gel for four weeks. Your skin typically just needs a little time to adjust.

- Is There a Generic Version of Differin?
Yes. The generic version of Differin is called Adapalene.
- Who Makes Differin?
Differin is created and distributed by Galderma Laboratories, L.P., which is owned by the Nestlé Skin Health Company.
- Does Differin Gel Work?
Differin is proven to help reduce acne when used regularly. It can take up to 12 weeks to see results from this medication, so don't give up if you don't see changes right away.
- Does Differin Gel Contain Retinol?
Yes. Differin gel contains Adapalene which is a retinoid. Retinols are a type of Retinoids, but they are not the same thing. Adapalene is much stronger than a Retinol.
- Does Differin Gel Help With Wrinkles?
Studies show that Retinoids can help reduce wrinkles and the appearance of fine lines when used regularly over a long period of time. If you're using Differin simply to reduce signs of aging, you may want to start with the lesser strength option before using the prescription strength to see what your skin needs.
- Does Differin Gel Expire?
Each tube of Differin gel has an expiration date. It's important not to use the gel after that date and to dispose of it safely out of reach of children.
- Does Differin Gel Work on Blackheads?
Differin gel is effective against pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. The Retinoid compound in Differin works to prevent clogged pores by regulating the life cycle of skin cells. When your skin cells are producing at a rapid rate or dying too quickly, they can easily clog pores, leading to blackheads and other forms of acne. Differin regulates these cells, causing them to produce and die more steadily, thus preventing clogs.
- Does Differin Gel Help With Acne Scarring?
Discoloration and pock mark scars can be greatly reduced by using Differin, thanks to its ability to help your skin create new, healthy cells that replace the unhealthy cells that make up a scar. Differin also helps regulate how long melanin stays in one place on the skin while an acne spot is healing, so the healing happens faster, leading to less discoloration. Raised acne scars may need the attention of a dermatologist.
