Nurx Launches in Iowa
Iowa, you’re up! We’re excited to offer easy and affordable access to sensitive healthcare needs to the people of the Hawkeye state — from wherever you are, whenever works for you. That means birth control, cervical cancer screening, and the HIV prevention medication PrEP, prescribed online and delivered to your door.
Better Access to Essential Women’s Healthcare
The ability for Iowans to get birth control through Nurx comes not a moment too soon. More than 170,000 women in Iowa live in “contraception deserts,” meaning the nearest health clinic offering comprehensive birth control options is unreasonably far away. The problem became worse in 2017, when Iowa lawmakers banned Planned Parenthood clinics from receiving state funds. Planned Parenthood had to close four Iowa clinics, and the state’s family planning program is now paying for fewer than a third as many birth control pills and related services as it did before the ban.
Nurx offers a solution. Sign up on the Nurx website or mobile app, then a state-licensed medical provider will determine the right medication for you. Many of the 50 birth control brands we prescribe are free with insurance (we’ll bill your plan directly) and if you’re paying out-of-pocket we have options starting as low as $15 per month. We deliver to your door for free in a discreet package. Need the “morning after pill” like Ella or Plan B in Iowa? We’ve got you — our medical providers prescribe emergency contraception.
We also offer Iowa women a new way to prevent cervical cancer, with our HPV Home Test Kit. The simple swab test is painless and takes just minutes. Return it in the prepaid envelope and we’ll test you for the 14 strains of the HPV virus that can lead to cervical cancer. Our medical team will let you know whether you need follow-up care or if you can wait a few years for your next screening.
Making HIV Prevention Easier in Iowa
Another first for Iowans: Convenient access to PrEP, a daily pill that is up to 99% effective at preventing HIV. Nurx is the only company that allows you to consult with a provider to see if PrEP is right for you, complete the necessary lab tests at home, and have PrEP delivered straight to your door – no trips to the clinic or lab required. Nearly 100 Iowans receive an HIV diagnosis every year, and we hope that expanding access to PrEP can protect more people.
