PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) is for people who are not living with HIV and would like to remain HIV-negative and is a combination of safe sex practices and a daily medication. Currently, the FDA approved branded medications for PrEP are Truvada® and Descovy. Descovy for HIV prevention was approved in 2019, while Truvada was approved in 2012. The FDA also recently approved a generic version of PrEP, emtricitibane and tenofovir disoproxil. Both the brand name and generic versions of PrEP contain two medications: tenofovir and emtricitabine.
